Today's lesson is going to expand our concept of playing a short and steady flow of 16th note Triplets between the kick, snare and hi-hat. In this lesson, we'll expand our sticking to cover two beats of the groove. This pattern is getting a little busier so don't forget to use the PDF download to help you with the sticking.
Today's lesson takes a look at the basic Afro Cuban 6/8 groove. We're going to break this groove down by working on the hands first and then bringing in the kick drum to complete the groove. Today’s lesson will take a look at some bass drum techniques I’ve worked on over the years. I’ll cover topics about how to strike the drum (heel up vs. heel down) as well as what to do after you strike the drum (burying the beater vs. letting the beater come up off the head). I’ll also share a couple of ways to work on playing two quick notes back to back with a single pedal. Enjoy!
The Blues are the foundation of almost every important musical genre of the 20th century – from Jazz to Rock to Soul to Funk to Hip-Hop and beyond. As Willie Dixon so eloquently put it, “The Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits.” This lesson will give you the basics of blues drumming as well as a some essential recordings that will get you started with this style: The Basic Beat The basic blues beat is a triplet based pattern in 12/8. That means there are twelve eighth notes in the bar and they are usually played on the hi-hat or ride cymbal. Count and play "one-and-a, two-and-a, three-and-a, four-and-a" or "one-trip-let, two-trip-let, three-trip-let, four-trip-let". Once you've got this going add the bass drum on one and three and the snare drum on two and four to create the basic blues pattern.
