I just bought a metronome and can use it with headphones so this lesson was very helpful.

Thanks Billy! Learning to use the click for the first time has been challenging. The extra "clicks" and sounds in my ear are very distracting but your suggestions on how to practice have helped.

Billy,
Great lesson! Just diving back into playing and learning with a click. This was really informative. Can't wait to utilize your suggestions. Echoing another poster Bobby, you're a great teacher! Side note: took notice of your kick drum foot work and it seems like a really relaxed playing position. Gonna watch again & give it a try.
Thanks,
Steve

Mr Billy,
Appreciate you sharing your expertise. I am always encouraged not only by your playing, but equally by your communication skills. You have quite a skill to explain things in a way that a hobbyist like myself can understand and apply in practical ways. Not many professional drummers are also great teachers, you got them both down.. Bobby

Great lesson once again. Thanks.

On your first example with the 16th note click you did a linear fill. Is it possible to tell me the pattern of the fill? I was trying to figure it out on the vid. and couldn't get it. Thanks again.

Thanks! Do you mean the fill @ 7:12??

In the groove demo portion, the first linear fill is at 6:42, second at 7:12 and the third at 7:42. The first one at 6:42 is what I was
referring to. It sounds great. Great lesson. Any way you can provide the sticking pattern for the fill at 6:42? Thanks alot.

OK! This is actually what I refer to as a 32nd note fill combo between the hands and feet. For the most part I play a steady flow of 32nd notes, and just practice breaking them up around the kit between my hands & feet. The one you are talking about goes like this: 4-hands 2-feet, 2-hands 2-feet, 4-hands 2-feet, 2-hands 2-feet, 4-hands 2-feet. I also start on the "e" of beat one, so that last hit of the last 2 with my foot is actually the downbeat of the next measure. I'm just randomly moving my hands around the kit. It's kinda hard to break down because I just sort of let my hands go...and see what comes out :) I've got a lesson posted on this idea..

Hey Billy,

I really want to view this lesson but for some reason YouTube says that it's blocked in my country due to copyright grounds. Is anyone else getting the same problem as I am? Thanks.

Great lesson, cleared up some questions I had. I've recently joined a band and I've started using the click every time we play, whether that's rehearsing or playing live. I use a small mixer, connect the metronome on one input and the monitor on another and plug in my headphones. That way I can balance the click with the music so I can hear both clearly.
The only thing is that I have to always let everybody know where the time is - ie in parts where there's only guitars playing or something - by either clicking the sticks or the hi-hat etc. But it makes everything feel nice and tight.

Thanks again Billy.

I know exactly what you mean! Whenever you're the only one hearing the click & you stop playing for whatever reason, you have to give the time to the rest of the band. If everyone has good timing sometimes I can get away with playing lightly on the cymbals. Thanks for watching!

Same here, take out the click or the music and I get lost easily. Thanks for the lesson Billy!

Hey Billy

Thanks for the lesson!

What metronome do you use (mine is dieing)?

A lot of great advice, for sure. I tend to play with the click all the time.

Without the Click my drum instructor told me I have great time, but push the beat. He thought it was great, and asked me if it was intentional. I had to admit, that I was trying to hit the beat dead on...

Somehow practicing with music (a band or play along) is easier for me. But I have not recorded myself yet! (The acid test!)

cheers, eddie

Hey Eddie,
I use an MPC 2000 for my metronome here in the studio. Yeah I hear you, it can be easier to lock with music as apposed to just the click. I would strongly recommend you try taping yourself for some honest feedback though :)
Good luck!

Hey Billy,

I used to play guitar many, many years ago. I could play super fast, but had lousy time. Then I started playing bass. I decided I would just take it slow and get it! (the timing)

A fellow bass player showed me this simple exercise (I know all drummers know it!):

Put the metronome on a slow speed (60 might be too slow) And then just hit the sticks together with the click. When you got it dialed, which is surprisingly hard, you shouldn't hear the click of the metronome.

cheers, eddie
