Today’s lesson will take a look at playing the & or up beat pattern on the hi-hat during a groove. For now the snare will continue to play a nice solid rim shot for beats 2 & 4. This can feel a little strange if it’s your first time trying this. We’re going to ease into this by only playing 8th note figures on the kick drum for now. Don’t forget to download the PDF file for 12 one bar grooves to practice. Enjoy!
In today's lesson we're going to incorporate our heel toe hi-hat technique into a groove setting. We're going to cover playing both the downbeat and upbeat with our opening hi-hat pattern while we practice playing the rhythms from the download PDF on the kick drum. This is a great workout for your hi-hat foot. Enjoy!
For Part 3, we’re going to expand the Hi-Hat pattern with our left foot. We’re keeping the same hand pattern with the ride playing straight 8th notes with 2 & 4 on the snare. This time though our left foot will play every “&” or up beat on the Hi-Hat while your kick drum works out by reading the rhythms from the PDF download. This one can get a little tricky….Enjoy!
In Part 2, we continue to work on controlling the hi-hat in a groove setting. Here’s a couple more ideas to try. Enjoy!
In today’s lesson I’m going to discuss a great way to get more mileage from your practice time with method books or sheets. By swinging the notes, you’ll open up a whole new area to explore!
Today's lesson is on applying basic 8th note rhythms as fills around the drum set. Now that you're learning to read, it's time to start applying this stuff to the kit!!
On this lesson, we're going to take the Rhythms from the Understanding 8th Notes Lesson and apply them to the kick drum to create a series of grooves!!
Here's the follow up to our Lesson on understanding Quarter Notes. Today we're going to look at subdividing and counting 8th notes....it's starting to get fun now!!
