I wanted to put together a few lesson/tutorial videos about some of my favorite grooves. Here are two of my all-time favorite grooves, which also happened to be unique forms of the classic half-time shuffle. First is Jason McGerr's half-time shuffle from "Grapevine Fires," followed by Darren King's chorus groove from the song, "You Are Mine."My Setup:Pearl Session Custom (12" 14" toms)22" KickBenny Greb Snare 13" x 5.75"Sabian HHX Evo 18" o zone crashHHX Evo 17" crash21" AAX Stage RideVintage Sabian Hand Hammered Dark Hats 14"

This is ride pattern that I have been messing around with for the Half-time shuffle. I got the idea while working out the Dennis Chambers ride pattern last week. It is super simple but very hard to play. Have fun let me know if you have any questions. Here is the link to the sheet music.

This is a linear version of the half time (purdie) shuffle. I also use it towards the end as a really fast groove fill, idea. Link to the sheet music. Please let me know if this link works.

This is a poly-rhythmic concept that you can add over top of a half time shuffle groove. It is an idea taken from Dennis Chambers. The idea is not to learn the things Dennis played note for note and stop, but to be able to take his concepts and ideas and apply them to your own playing in a personal expression.

This is the first in a series of videos I am planning on doing on half-time shuffle. I plan on starting from a very basic framework and adding to that groove one concept at a time. The idea is that if you go through all the videos in the series you will have a good enough vocabulary to improvise your own half-time shuffle grooves. Today’s lesson is going to add some more ghost notes to our hand pattern. These two tiny notes really help to propel the groove forward. Don’t forget to download the PDF file for the kick drum patterns to workout with. Enjoy!
Today’s lesson will take a look at playing the & or up beat pattern on the hi-hat during a groove. For now the snare will continue to play a nice solid rim shot for beats 2 & 4. This can feel a little strange if it’s your first time trying this. We’re going to ease into this by only playing 8th note figures on the kick drum for now. Don’t forget to download the PDF file for 12 one bar grooves to practice. Enjoy!
In Part 3, we're going to continue to expand our kick drum patterns. The hands will stay the same and you're still playing every up beat on the hi-hat with your left foot. If you're not certain on the pattern, please check out one of the earlier lessons to get this down. The download PDF will provide you with 12 one bar patterns to practice on the kick drum. Enjoy!
This is the final version of adding ghost notes to our 1/2 Time Shuffle. Today we're going to add the middle triplet to beat 3. This can be a little tricky at first. Remember you have to still hit the back beat as a rim shot then quietly tap the ghost note immediately after. I recommend getting the hand pattern down first, before you try playing the kick drum patterns from the PDF download. This is my favorite version to play. Enjoy!
