In Part 5 we’re going to take a look at the final combination to play on the kick drum in a groove setting, the first two triplets. Anything involving the middle triplet can be tricky and this figure is no exception. Remember to be patient and go at your own pace.
In today's lesson I'll break down a Tribal Tom Groove I created years ago that is based on 8th Note Triplets. Enjoy!
For the lesson today we're going to venture into 16th note world with the kick drum patterns. We'll start by adding the 1st and last 16th note along with just the "e" and just the "a". Our hands will stay consistent through out, playing a steady flow of 16th note Paradiddles between the snare and hi-hat. These PDF Download Rhythms can really be a challenge played on the kick drum! Enjoy.
We're going to expand on this Groove by adding the 1st two 16th notes (1e) and the last two 16th notes (&a) to the Rhythms included in the PDF Download. Our hand pattern will stay the same for now, playing a steady flow of 16th notes between the snare and hi-hat. This workout is a lot of fun and will really help you get use to accenting the snare on the "e" and "a" throughout the Groove.
For today’s lesson we’re going to look at a technique used to create an open and closed hi-hat effect by using your left foot only. Get ready for a left leg workout! Once you get this concept down, it’s a great way to spice up a groove.
For Part 3, we're going to expand our flow of 32nd notes phrased between the kick, snare and hi-hat in a groove setting. Today's lesson will take a look at starting the flow earlier in the groove on the "&" of beat 1 or 3, then continue the flow through the next back beat. There's a lot of notes going by very quickly so be patient!
Today's lesson is going to continue our study of phrasing groups of 7 over a steady flow of 16th notes. We're going to keep the sticking the same RLRLRLL and now look at playing this pattern over 2 bars of 16th notes. Enjoy!
Today’s lesson is going to take a look at what I call the Paradiddle Groove. We’ll create the groove by simply playing a steady flow of 16th notes as Paradiddles and then moving the right hand up to the hi-hat. After the hands get comfortable, we’ll practice playing a series of 1 bar rhythms from the download PDF on the kick drum to create several different Paradiddle Grooves.

I've had a Drum Dial in my drum room for years, I love them. It's always nice to check out your tension with a dial and see how you're drum is doing. It also gives you pretty accurate tuning. These are my techniques and I will still tune the drum on the kit... minor tweaks or a complete retune. Today’s lesson takes a look at an easy way to introduce Ghost Notes into a Groove. This is a great way to get use to not hitting the snare on 2 and 4. Be sure and download the PDF file and print the page so you can work your way through all 12 Rhythms.
