Freeing the Half-time shuffle: Dennis Chambers

by drumennut on 01/29/2011 | 3,434 Views | 0 Comments

This is a poly-rhythmic concept that you can add over top of a half time shuffle groove. It is an idea taken from Dennis Chambers. The idea is not to learn the things Dennis played note for note and stop, but to be able to take his concepts and ideas and apply them to your own playing in a personal expression.

Freeing the Half-time shuffle part 1

by drumennut on 01/29/2011 | 1,276 Views | 0 Comments

This is the first in a series of videos I am planning on doing on half-time shuffle. I plan on starting from a very basic framework and adding to that groove one concept at a time. The idea is that if you go through all the videos in the series you will have a good enough vocabulary to improvise your own half-time shuffle grooves. Afro-Cuban Drumming - Songo - The Drum Ninja

by thedrumninja on 01/26/2011 | 2,569 Views | 0 Comments

Que Bola Ninjas!! For today's lesson we're heading down to Cuba to learn about one of it's coolest exports, Songo. This is one of my favorite grooves as it combines elements from the rumba, son cubano, and other contemporary afro-american styles like jazz and funk. Exercises Download the pdf at www.thedrumninja.com Take a look at the accompanying PDF. You’ll see six variations of the Songo groove, of which the first four are demonstrated in the video. See if you can follow along and when you are ready give it a go. Start really slow (50bpm) and work your way up to a gigging tempo. There are two empty lines on the PDF. Try to come up with some variations of your own or check out some of the recommended listening below and see if you can transcribe what you hear.  History Songo was developed in the 1970's by the legendary Cuban percussionist Changuito of the group Los Van Van. It was a major breakthrough in Latin music because it introduced the drumset int... more...

How To Play Satellite By DMB

by thedrumninja on 01/21/2011 | 1,888 Views | 0 Comments

This week we'll be learning how to play the live version of by Dave Matthews Band which appeared on the 1997 album Live at Red Rocks. Despite being a live release, the album was very successful, hitting #3 on the album charts, and selling over two million copies. Download The PDF: www.thedrumninja.com Satellite is in 6/8 and really showcases drummer Carter Beauford's dynamic and creative playing style. You'll quickly realize that Carter rarely plays the same thing twice so you have to be on your toes to get to grips with his constantly changing parts. Verse The verse of Satellite is a chopped up semi-linear pattern played between the hi-hats, snare and bass drum. The snare drum is on the four of each bar and remains constant throughout. This creates continuity while the other voices are free to roam and to play syncopated patterns that move in and out of Dave's guitar parts. Listen to the track a few times while reading the pdf and try to sing what Carter is playing. This will help... more...

How To Play Bombtrack By Rage Against The Machine

by thedrumninja on 01/21/2011 | 2,490 Views | 0 Comments

This week we'll be learning how to play Bombtrack by Rage Against The Machine which was the opening song on their self-titled debut album. The album was released on November 6, 1992 hitting #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and #45 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Download The PDF: www.thedrumninja.com Bombtrack sits at around 76bpm and drummer Brad Wilk lays into the guitar riff with a constant underlying pulse of 16th notes - played on a combination of closed and slushy hats. The song starts off with the guitar and bass riff.  Look at the transcription and you'll see that the drums enter on bar seven with sixteenth notes played in unison on the bass drum, snare and floor tom. Increase the volume across these two bars to build the intensity along with the rest of the band.  At this point the chorus theme enters which is sixteenth notes played on slushy hi-hats, back beat on two and four and a syncopated two bar bass drum pattern that ends with three crashes on the ... more...

How To Play Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz

by thedrumninja on 01/21/2011 | 2,282 Views | 0 Comments

In this lesson I'll be showing you how to play Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz. This track was released in 1993 from the album of the same name and became one of Lenny's most successful songs. Download The PDF: http://thedrumninja.com/drum-transcriptions/ The track features one of the catchiest guitar riffs ever written but it's Cindy Blackman's high-energy drumming that really makes the song (at least it does for me!). The vibe is established straight from the outset with quarter notes on the snare to accompany the guitar part and an occasional bass drum punctuation. Simple but very effective! Cindy moves to an 8th note groove played heavily on the ride before moving to the hi-hats for the verse. The hi-hats are quite slushy throughout to give it that dirty rock feel. The main thing to look out for is the broken 16th note fill between the snare and hi-hat which leads into the chorus. It's quite tricky and lasts twice as long on the repeat.  The drum... more...
