I use a $20 pair of Sony headphones from Wal-Mart. They have the foam isolation so that you can hear the music, but they don't completely surround the ear so you can still hear the drums pretty well too. I've used them for years with CDs and now with mp3s

If you get an amp you would have to really crank it so the acoustic drums wouldn't drown it out. You'll probably end up wanting to hear the sound in your ears so I would just stick with the earphones, trying to play quieter will allow you to hear the music and can only help your dynamics.

I still say Vic Firth Isolation headphones. I've removed drums from my monitor mix completely. If anything, I've learned to use a hint of Overhead mics in with it, but never full blast my drums in the mix.
I've also learned to mix my headphone volumes with the kit accoustically. Since I'm not using any drums in my headphones, I simply mix it and enjoy the natural sound of the kit muffled through the headphones. It works well for me!
If you're into recording and that's what you want to do, then go for the mics but still don't mix them into your headphone mix unless you absolutely need it.
As well, if you're recording, be careful on how you monitor your mixes. If you're using a bunch of plugins and monitoring back through your software, you may experience delays that could cause your playing and the overall performance to suffer. Always monitor as close to the source sounds as possible with no latency.

If you can practice LOUD where you live, an amp, loud home stereo, or maybe studio monitors and computer are all great options. This is loud so earplugs may be required. Another option is to get a small mixer and a couple mics, run your ipod and mics through the mixer, and enjoy through the headphones.

Vic Firth Isolation Headphones are the best $50 bucks online or at a music store. I've used the others and have always preferred the Vic firth Isolation Headphones!!
