I have a book called The New Breed by Gary Chester does what you did. I thought it was a neat to see it applied.

it's interesting to watch your left heel and how you use it to fill in the beats your not playing on your right foot (or something)... Can you elaborate?

How cool that you picked up on that! I think I subconsciously do that to help keep myself in time....sort of filling in the holes. I never realized I was doing that. I've heard Billy Ward talking about this sort of thing. He actually clicks his teeth as well to help keep the pulse internalized!! Hope he has a good dentist :)
Seriously though, I think it's a great idea to use these "mechanisms",as Billy calls them, whenever possible. Whatever it takes to groove better!!
