by thedrumninja on 10/20/2010 | 2,220 Views | 0 Comments

If your goal is to play anything like Gavin Harrison, Mike Portnoy or Neil Peart then you'll have to step up to the odd time plate sooner or later. Odd time drumming can be a little tricky to get your head around but once you have it down it will add a whole new dimension to your playing.   In this lesson we'll take a look at 5/8. There is an exercise pdf that you can download and some recommended listening to help you develop the feel so go grab your sticks and let's do this: How To Count – There are a couple of ways to count 5/8. You can count the obvious 'one two three four five' or you can break the five down into smaller cells 'one two one two three' ... 'one two three one two'.  Choose the method that you prefer and stick with it for a while. You should only really need to count at the learning stage. With enough repetition you'll feel the five grouping naturally.  Take a look at the PDF. You'll se... more...

How To Play The Blues - The Drum Ninja

by thedrumninja on 09/26/2010 | 2,917 Views | 0 Comments

The Blues are the foundation of almost every important musical genre of the 20th century – from Jazz to Rock to Soul to Funk to Hip-Hop and beyond. As Willie Dixon so eloquently put it, “The Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits.”  This lesson will give you the basics of blues drumming as well as a some essential recordings that will get you started with this style: The Basic Beat The basic blues beat is a triplet based pattern in 12/8. That means there are twelve eighth notes in the bar and they are usually played on the hi-hat or ride cymbal. Count and play "one-and-a, two-and-a, three-and-a, four-and-a" or "one-trip-let, two-trip-let, three-trip-let, four-trip-let". Once you've got this going add the bass drum on one and three and the snare drum on two and four to create the basic blues pattern.  Practice at a slow 50bpm to really lock in the timing and work on getting the right sound. You can then practice t... more...

Hurry Up And Wait - Soulive - The Drum Ninja

by thedrumninja on 09/20/2010 | 4,024 Views | 3 Comments

Here's a look at the track Hurry Up And Wait from the Doin’ Something album by one of my favorite bands, Soulive. It features the grooving drums of Alan Evans, his brother Neal on the Hammond B3 and Eric Krasno on guitar. Very few trios are able to get such a big, funky sound which is why I love this group and this track so much. Download the pdf. The intro to this tune is in 6/4 with a strong accent on beat one and 8th notes played on the hi-hat. Alan plays some tasty little ghost notes with all the sixteenths swung. After 8 bars there's a time change to 4/4 with the groove played on the ride and the vibe kept pretty consistent.  It's the C Section where things get nice and funky and the group pick hits on beats one, two and three in the first bar of a four bar phrase followed by beats one, two and the a of two in the third bar of the phrase. As you jam along to this track forget anything fancy, go for groove and keep it loose enough so that it feels nice and rela... more...
