How To Play Mountains by Biffy Clyro

by thedrumninja on 04/19/2011 | 2,136 Views | 0 Comments

Download the pdf at www.thedrumninja.com/drum-transcriptions Ninjas! In this lesson we'll be learning how to play Mountains by Biffy Clyro which is the band's highest charting single to date, peaking at #5 on the UK singles chart. Originally released on August 18, 2008 as a 'non-album' single, it was later included on the band's fifth studio album, Only Revolutions. Mountains is a great example of drummer, Ben Johnston's powerful and energetic playing. He drives the track with an eighth-note rock feel and breaks up the different sections of the song by switching between the hi-hats, ride and crash. Verse On the verse you will notice a bar of 4/4 followed by a bar of 7/8. The first few times you hear this it can be a bit confusing but follow along with the transcription and all will become clear.  Chorus During the chorus Ben plays a heavy eighth-note groove on the crash to give it that massive sound. The snare changes from a two and four backbeat to the three... more...

Love Is Stronger Than Justice - Sting - The Drum Ninja

by thedrumninja on 03/28/2011 | 2,417 Views | 0 Comments

Download The PDF at http://thedrumninja.com Ninjas! In this lesson we'll be learning how to play Love Is Stronger Than Justice (The Munificant Seven) by Sting which was the second track on his 1993 release (fourth studio album) Ten Summoner's Tales. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1993. In 1994, it was nominated for five Grammy awards, winning Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("If I Ever Lose My Faith in You") and Best Long Form Music Video.  Love Is Stronger than justice features the stellar drumming of Vinnie Colaiuta who really made a statement with a rock solid 7/8 groove that switches seamlessly into a quirky country shuffle on the chorus. He also opens up a little in the outro and offers a little taster of what he's truly capable of.  Verse The verse groove is in 7/8 and features a sixteenth note pattern played with the right hand on the hi-hat. The snare lands on the three an... more...

How To Play Long Road To Ruin - Foo Fighters - The Drum Ninja

by thedrumninja on 03/21/2011 | 2,082 Views | 0 Comments

Download the PDF: http://thedrumninja.com/drum-transcriptions Ninjas! In this lesson we'll be learning how to play Long Road To Ruin by the Foo Fighters which was the second single from their 2007 release (sixth studio album) Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. The single topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart for seven consecutive weeks and reached number two on the Mainstream Rock Tracks in late 2008. It peaked at number 89 on the Billboard Hot 100. Verse – After a seven bar rest Taylor plays a two note fill on the last two sixteenths of bar eight. He then lays into a driving eighth note groove played on dirty hi-hats. The snare plays on two and four while the bass drum plays on one, three and the and of three. Notice the eighth note fill played between the tom, snare and bass drum that leads into the pre-chorus. This acts as a nice transition into the next groove.  Pre Chorus – The right hand moves over to the ride cymbal for the pre-chorus to lift th... more...

Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2 - The Drum Ninja

by thedrumninja on 02/24/2011 | 3,983 Views | 1 Comments

Download the transcription: http://thedrumninja.com/drum-transcriptions/ In this lesson we'll be learning how to play Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 which was the opening track from their 1983 release War. The single didn't have an impact on the charts but it certainly did on music as a whole. Critics rate it among the best political protest songs and it was named the 268th greatest song by Rolling Stone on their list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Sunday Bloody Sunday features a sixteenth note military style groove played between the snare and hi-hats. The hi-hats are played dirty with the shaft of the stick and the bass drum plays four on the floor throughout. The beat should be played with some aggression and a hard edge to capture the political nature of the song.  Verse During the verse the snare drum hits are quite sparse appearing on the and of four on bar one then the and, a of four on bar two. This two bar pattern repeats three times. The last two... more...

How To Play Space Cowboy by Jamiroquai

by thedrumninja on 02/17/2011 | 2,528 Views | 0 Comments

Download the transcription @ www.thedrumninja.com/drum-transcriptions/ Ninjas! In this lesson we'll be learning how to play Space Cowboy by Jamiroquai which was the lead single from their 1994 release The Return of the Space Cowboy. The single reached #17 in the UK charts but the album version (the one we're learning) is very different with a far more interesting drum part and structure. Space Cowboy features a mid-tempo sixteenth note groove that drummer Derek McKenize lays right in the pocket. The pulse is solid and there are loads of bass drum syncopations, hi-hat opens and rolls which give the track a super funky flavor.  Verse If you take a look at the verse on the pdf you'll notice sixteenths on the hi-hat, a backbeat on the snare and the bass drum falling on one, the a of two and three. The hi-hat is played clean and opens on the a of three and e of four. The fill coming out of the verse has a crash on the a of beat four which follows the band and sets up the chorus.... more...

Tom Sawyer - Rush - The Drum Ninja

by thedrumninja on 02/11/2011 | 4,002 Views | 1 Comments

Download The PDF: www.thedrumninja.com/drum-transcriptions Hey Ninjas! In this lesson we'll be learning how to play Tom Sawyer by Rush which appeared on the 1981 release Moving Pictures. The track peaked at  No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. In 2009 it was named the 19th greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.  Tom Sawyer is a great demonstration of drummer Neil Peart's unique and musical playing. He drives the song with a constant flow of one handed sixteenths, a rock solid backbeat and some intricate bass drum syncopations. Verse The verse features a rock solid groove with punctuations on the bass drum/open hi-hat which land on the e of beat four. To give it that nice crisp sound the hi-hat should close straight after on the and of four. The hi-hat notes should all have a nice even spacing to them which will require a bit of practice.   Chorus On the chorus of the tune the bass drum follows the hits o... more...
