He teaches that being able to speak/talk while playing is actually very important in a live situation just in case something goes wrong with your equioment. If something goes wrong, you need to be able to speak up to whoever is back there ready to fix your problem. Mike Johnston shows a really cool way to play a double bass groove with one foot. It's basically built around a 32nd note double stroke roll between the kick and right hand(deepest floor tom), and when sped up, sounds really cool!
