Well, I'm happy to say that the studio insulation is complete. Thanks to Tiger Foam Do-it-Yourself (DIY) spray foam insulation kits, I was able to finally get the insulation done.
In our "corner of the world" here, the saying "If you want it done right, do it yourself..." is not entirely correct. It's more like "If you want it DONE, do it yourself". As previously mentioned in my other blog entry Studio Delayed: Beware of this Insulation Company I talked about how trying to get local spray foam insulation companies has turned out to be nothing but a waste of time. So, I've now learned how to become a spray foam insulation dude.
I ordered 3 of these kits and picked them up at the UPS facilty
yesterday. I arrived home around 5 PM and my wife and I started working with insulation kits. At around 8 PM we were done spraying and I ran to grab some regular R-13 insulation. I decided after running out of foam that we'd suppliment some areas with R-13. I liked how well it worked, so we started to add more insulation as many places as possible. In the end, we have a 1 - 2 inch thick foam coating (some areas thicker) and then we put R-13 all over. This place is tight!
Overall the foam insulation process was very easy. If you follow the directions that comes with the kits, and you change your nozzles frequently, you will not have any problems. We ran through 3 kits and it was painless. A DIY Foam Insulation Kit takes about an hour to spray in. Allison (my sales rep) at Tiger Foam recommended that I change my nozzles every 8 minutes, or if I stop for more than 30 seconds, change the nozzle. Nozzles are cheap, time is not. Don't get caught without them! Each kit comes with an pack of nozzles, but I'd order more and change them frequently! As well, you want to ensure that your tip does not go into the foam that is wet and you've already sprayed on the wall. This causes funky spray patterns and build-up on the end of your nozzle.
Each DIY Foam Insulation Kit costs around $640 each and weighs approximately 120 lbs. Don't expect overnight shipping on this! The exact kit that I ordered is Foam Kits - 600 bd. ft. Foam Kits (50 cu. ft.) They are expected to cover 600 foot at 1 inch thickness.
I've uploaded some videos and some pictures. Here's the videos:
