Hello all, this is my first official post here! Must say that I find this website truly inspirational, a melting pot for great ideas and advice regarding us drummers!
Anyways, a little background on me. I have been playing the drums on and off for about 5 years now, sometimes there would be as much as a year where I either couldn’t find a place to set up, or couldn’t find people to play with, so I’m not as good as most people who have had the opportunity of steady practice. I play mostly punk/metal kind of stuff but am very open to, and love fooling around with jazzy stuff as well.
All right, now the back story is out of the way, time for the reason I’m here. I recently started in a new band, one that wanted to play some really good, hard, fast metal tunes that required a lot of double kick. Double kicking has always been a weak point for me, and I was a little intimidated at first. But something great happened, I started playing like I had been doing it for years! It was some of the best double kick I had done so far, and only got better as the night progressed.
The reason for this? Well theres only one explanation I can come up with is that I got myself into a zone. I THOUGHT about it day and night, imagined the leg movements, I started throwing more into my practice routine with my electric kit, but it never turned out great, when the music was flowing I was on top of my game. Not only did the guys I was jamming with inspire me to do it, I was mentally prepared for it.
So if theres something youre stuck on, or if you feel that your playing has hit a wall, mix it up a bit, watch some videos, take a break form the kit, and sit back and visualize. I know this is confusing and sounds a little “mystical” but it did work for me. It took the stress and the “Gotta get it right” out of my practice and it shone through when it was really needed! Anyways, its just a thought floating around in my head right now, some of you will get it and it will work, some will just keep hitting the heads until they get that new fill/ skill/ what have you. There is no “Better” way to practice, just what works for you
