At NAMM 08 I was introduced to a product that is taking grip tape to a whole new level. Stick Grips, a Burbank, CA company has revolutionalized how grip tape is used on drum sticks. Whether it be marching band, playing a gig, or just jamming with friends Stick Gripps are a sure bet to keep the stick in your hand, and bring uniformity to your drumline. ( perfect for tenor and bass mallets) Not only have I tested the product first hand, I was fortunate enough to meet with and shoot a video demonstration with founder Cleve Alleyne himself. Check it out!
The idea of the rubber " O " ring around the stick gives the musician a custom grip specific to their individual playing style. Skeptical at first, thinking it would cause me to develop blisters from the "O" ring through friction, I was blown away by the comfortability of the stick once completed. These grips work great! By adjusting the ring to the exact fulcrum point, my speed improved immediately by giving me a perfect balance every time I grabbed the stick. It's like having a built-in sweet spot right on your grip! Also, there's nothing to wrap around the stick so installation is fool proof. No more wrapping and rewrapping until you get it right and it won't wear as fast as the other competitor's products. There is only one catch, or what I like to call "beneficial setback." Once this thing is on.....it's on. You have to cut it off to replace it BUT, at least it won't loosen, or come off during your performance. As you can see here in the finishing process.
So as you can see, very quick and practical, eliminating cumbersome wraps and the need to play with gloves that only hinder finger and wrist movement. This lets you play with the stick, not fight against it.
