Excellent video, great realistic approach to tuning. I like the way you dispell some of the myths that make tuning so nerve racking.

Tom Benjock Says 3 toms & the snare...

Steven.. thanks for the overview of tuning. Many younger drummers have a real fear of this topic. I just wanted to run something by you. Take a kit with 2 mounteds and one floor. The question I was asked was "Where do I put the snare in that mix?"... In my experience, I've always found that putting the snare in-between the first & second tom, gets rid of almost all of the sympathetic oinking (sorry my word). Then the little that's left is usually taken out with moon gel or some similar product. What's your take on this topic? Thanks for all the great lessons (you save me a ton of time).

Lol, glad I can save you some time! The dreaded sympathetic buzz...Yea, you're right. Putting the snare somewhere in between the two is the best answer, although I've never been able to get all of the sympathetic waves out with any consistency. I consistently use moon gels, in the studio and out. No shame here, lol! I think once kids can get over the fear of tuning and start experimenting (like they do with the rest of their drumming) they begin to have fun with it.
