Billy Ashbaugh: Funk Shuffle Workout Part 2

Here's the follow up to Funk Shuffle Workout Part 1. In this lesson
we're going use the same hand pattern from part one and begin to
explore playing various 16th note rhythms with the kick drum. Today
we're going to play all of the 1 & 2 note possibilities for every
beat of the groove. This exercise will help prepare you for putting
these patterns together randomly to create a series of Funk Shuffle
Grooves in the future. Enjoy!

I haven't tried it on the kit yet, but I was able to "air" drum along. What I really wanted to comment on is how tight Billy is. I know it's just a matter of putting the hi-hat and snare parts on "auto-pilot" and then concentrating and making sure that every beat lines up where it's supposed to. Easier said than done I'm sure!

SJDrummer Says Keeping bass drum doubles tight

Submitted On: Tuesday, Jun 8, 2010 - 12:26 AM

I notice these funk/blues shuffles really help me tighten up my doubles, both on the kick and with my hands, so when I go to play another punk beat, the 16th doubles take less energy and focus, and when I to tom-tom-kick-kick fills, I can do them and keep a good sound/volume. I'll get cracking on these tomorrow, can't wait for part 3!

That's great! You're right...it's amazing how one single technique can be applied to several different styles or concepts. Thanks for watching!
