Try keeping the double bass constant and your right hand too. If you look at it this way, it becomes a 6/8 beat, playing 16th notes with the feet, and constant 8ths with your right hand. On the first three 8th notes, play your left hand with your right hand. On the second three beats, hit only two off beats with your left hand (which will be on the "and" of 4 and 5). It's basically the same beat you're playing, but with a little more beef with the bass supporting everything else. I noticed Chris Adler from Lamb of God does this in almost all of his playing, almost every single fill he plays, he's keeping the double bass going with his hands, which gets weird when you're switching beats with your hands.

Tom..I'm watching your videos with my 8 year old son (drums as well) and we love your creativity (costume) and openess about your drumming thoughts. Honestly, we love your stuff. If you are having fun...that the first point...refinement is next. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!
