There are a lot of snares out there - and more hit the market every day.
I tend to favor 14x5 drums in metal. Depending on the gig I use SupraPhonics, Acrolites, or a 5x14 aluminum shell by Trick (I love their versatile strainer).
For some gigs I use a 5x14 DW maple snare with 42-strand wires - nice full sound. I also have a 5x14 Vistalite that I bring out for certain louder shows.
For concert band/symphonic band stuff I use a 5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty with a Super-Sensitive snare assembly.
What's your snare drum of choice?

I use my 5.5x12 snare for almost everything that I play, I just tune down and up for differing sounds. But if I want the really fat sound I'll pull out my old 5.5x14 birch snare (because it sounds like CRAP when it's tuned up.)

I swear by my old keystone badge Ludwig 400. If I'm recording and want a warmer sound, I use my old Slingerland wood shell 'Supa Krupa'.

I can never get enough of my DW 6 1/2 x 14 Edge Snare! It's a great sounding drum that has very nice tuning range.

I do a lot of small club/bar gigs which I bring a maple Pacific 12"x 6" with a Yamaha rim extension attached. Ambassador coated head. The rim extension is great because you can't do rim clicks on a 12"... and it sounds decent. This snare is great in that it's not so "in your face" as opposed to a 14". It sounds great in that I can lay into it and get a great crack, but not be so loud as to hold back on a 14" in a small club. I also bring along a 14" x 5" Ludwig Bronze snare, for more volume when the club gets so crowded that I need more volume...and what a great snare that is. Somewhere between metal and wood... with a PureSound twisted 24 strand snare wires, medium coated single ply head, and die-cast hoops.
I don't like laminated dots on my snare a whole lot. It messes with the rebound. I'd much rather muffle. unwanted ring.
When I do harder Rock gigs, festivals or bigger venues, I break out the bigger guns: a 14" x 5" Rocket Snare (carbon fiber), a 14" x 6.5" Pearl Free-floater with a brass shell, or my custom 14" x 7" solid wood (staved) Bubinga shell. The Rocket is LOUD, dynamically sensitive, and LOUD! I'd use it for all my gigs but it sounds out of place in small venues. I like the Bubinga for it's deep tone and killer rim click. both snares have die cast hoops.
I used to have a 6.5" DW Edge snare(Craviotto)... but that was lifted from my gear in transit to an out-of-state gig. They knew what they found and took it. THAT would have been a snare I'd have on hand if I only had to bring one snare to a gig. The Bronze Ludwig would be #2.
CHEERS!

I have an old, all-original Gretsch 14X5, champagne sparkle. It's my main snare these days. I use it mostly for acoustic jazz, but it's versatile enough to handle rock stuff or whatever.
A 1960-ish Ludwig Jazz Festival in white marine pearl is money in the bank for recording sessions.
Backups: Custom 14X6 maple with old Sonor lug casings. 13X3 Pearl piccolo in maple.

Check out Yamaha Roy Hanes model . It's hand hammered copper, which is a bit darker and warm. That's if you're looking for a metal drum.

I love my Maple black panther from the late 80's. Warm with a ton of attack. My second fav would be a hamered brass black panther. You can't go wrong with a black beauty but the cost for a good one is crazy.

I want your black beauty!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy crap I bet that snare is amazing.
I'm getting a OCDP microvent snare soon.
Any specific brand of snares you recommend? I bought a 42 strand set that was Gibraltar and the POS lost a bunch of snares after only a few gigs.

I have been getting into Pork Pie snares lately, they make great Snares, I just recently bought the Pork Pie Little Squealer 12 inch, and I couldn't be happier! it cuts through everything and has that amazing CRACK. but I have always liked higher pitched snares. Check out Pork Pie its worth looking into.

I'm a marching band geek so with all the different drums out there it has been the one I've always wanted to have. Nothing special...it's just one of those "Damian things" I guess.

Pearl free floating marching snare. CRACK!
[/quote]Pearl FF. Nice. I've never had the chance to play one. Besides the crack, what features do you like about it? What makes the drum your go-to?

I love the Ludwig Supraphonic 6.5x14. Always my favorite. My second is my Chad Smith Sig. drum. And my third is my 80's DW 8x14 snare, that thing has such a wide tuning range!
