Gig's, drums and more

Drmn4fun - Sat, 01/03/2009 - 01:56

Hello all,

I'm new to drummer connection and thought I'd join up and talk some shop.

Well I had a $50.00 gig tonight.  I do love playing, but I'm glad I'm not trying to make it on $50.00 per night gigs.  The life of a working musician must be brutal.  The competition of bands and other drummers out there - along with the club owners not being able to pay much makes it hard for most to try and make playing music their livelyhood.  In fact I only know 1 full time musician and he works his butt off giving lessons and struggling to get gigs.

Drums and music (in general) have been a big part of my life and am OK knowing I'll never make the BIG TIME music scene.  I'm happy doing my part for the local music scene while I eagerly await the next gig.

But enough about that - I recently (August) bought a new Mapex Saturn kit (7 piece - Mango Burst) and am really happy with it now that I've changed the heads.  Say it with me now "Stock Heads Suck!!!  As for the company, I was a little concerned once I discovered Mapex is a Chinese company, but the kit does sound amazing for the money I paid.  My only complaint is that I'm still waiting for my 8" tom.  My 5 star drum store may be getting another nasty gram from me soon.

Before my Mapex kit, I played a Pearl Export kit that I bought on Ebay.  It did the job overall, but repeatedly tearing the kit down started taking it's toll on the hardware.  I was replacing cymbal stands and drum joints.

My (new Mapex) kit is almost complete (not counting the 8" tom).  I only need a really nice ride cymbal.  I've been listening to a lot of videos on 'mycymbal.com' and I think I've narrowed my choice.  Unfortunately, the ones I want are 400 bucks (or 8 gigs for those of you keeping score).  So, I may just keep using that Zildjian Ping 20" for a while longer.

OK, I wasn't planning on rambling on like that, but I wanted to put something out there since I'm a new member and all.  I look forward to conversing with you(all) in the future.

Have a good one and keep on Drumming!

John

I wouldn't say glam rock, but definitely 80's rock...if ya know what I mean. I used to like Tommy back in the day but in my opinion he's not the drummer's pick of the litter anymore, he's more popular than good....if ya know what I mean. ;)
Too much ego, I just can't take the guy seriously. Not to hate on him, he's still a good musician, just not for me.

Oh Kyle I almost forgot. If you like playing aggressive music then you should try the Sabian AA Metal-X crashes. I've own a 16 & 18 in crash and have given them quite a pounding over the past four years and the 18 just cracked the other day. By all means listen to them first before you make a decision, but it's a great sounding cymbal and it's VERY durable.

Ill check them out, im gonna make some cymbal purchases soon. I did just order my new heads though so im waiting for those to come in.

I'm a huge fan of Motley Crue which I consider hard rock, but most people probably consider it closer to glam rock. You've probably not heard too much from them.

Welcome to the site John! I also have the same lug problem on my Chad Smith. I thinks it's because I tend to play a lto of rimshots. I bough a couple of the lug locks, they're really cheap and work out great. They're like .30 cents each. Try those out and tell me what you think.

You're only 15!  Wow, you are very well spoken (at least with the writen word).  And you have great taste - the AAX's are great cymbals as you know and you have a real rockin kit there.  I never got into the hardcore - metal rock for playing.  Probably because everyone I've played with played classic rock.  I find that most people gravitate to the music they listened to during their formative years (like around 15).  So that being said, I'm into late 70's early 80's rock.  I'm a huge fan of Motley Crue which I consider hard rock, but most people probably consider it closer to glam rock. You've probably not heard too much from them.

Anyway, the Warlord snare sounds like a great snare.  I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but be sure to play it before you buy it.  And play it they way you'll be playing it after you buy it.  The larger drum shops will have a room for you to give it a work out in.  I've been playing a friends kit that has an Omar Hakim signature (13") Pearl snare.  It has such a great snap to it with just enough snare buzz.  The only complaint I have about it is that after a couple songs, I have to re-tighten the one lug where my left hand stick hits.  I Have a OAK Musashi (Yamaha) snare that I use on my set and love, but I still like the Hakim better.  By the way, the Musashi also needs re-tightening after a couple tunes too, so maybe it's me.

Power tom shells rock!  I had them on my Pearl Exports.

I'm playing a vintage Tama Rockstar Dx. There not made anymore, not sure why they wouldn't though! they sound awesome. studio quality. Here's some pics

Im moving up all my cymbals towards AAX slowly but surely.
Only 15 years old at the moment, so i don't have much time to gig but i am experimenting with some bands.
As for music im up for about anything. My forte would probably be hardcore or metal-ish style.
And im probably gonna get a warlord snare soon  ;) like the sound and that it has Tama on it xD

Btw, The toms on this set are so deep that there used to be a 14" RACK tom on my set and i had to convert it to a floor tom. I hardly get clearance from my bass drum, but its worth it for the awesome sound i get ;D

Hey Kyle,

Thanks for the late shippment info on Mapex.  It will change the tact I take when discussing the shippment with the guys at the drum shop.

And speaking of the 8" tom, I bought a matching 8" tom for my Pearl kit that I just could not get a tone I was happy with.  It was one of the reasons I bought a new kit.  You know how you read about, or hear about how a certain kit allows a wide range of tuning.  I would have been happy with one good tuning on that tom.

I'll let you know if it was all worth it.  I've had the head now for a couple months.

What series of Tama do you have?  Those warlords are impressive (but too pricy for my wallet).  I had an Imperial Star that a friend gave me to hold me over.  It was a real work horse but finially fell apart.

Let me know if you're giging and what kind of music you like playing if you get a chance.

Have a good one.
John

Welcome to drummer connection john!
I hear that late shipments happen a lot with mapex kits, so i wouldn't assume its your store, unless you already know it is. But as far as quality they're pretty good especially for the price.
And yeah, stock heads suck BIG TIME. i actually need to switch my drum heads soon. I've had these a little past their prime.

Tell me how that 8" sounds once you get it tuned. I was wondering if i should get one for my tama kit.

Hope to see more posts!  ;D
