Former Kiss drummer Peter Criss has revealed that he was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 but treated the disease before it could spread and is now cancer-free. To help bring awareness to National Breast Cancer Month, Criss talked about his scare with CNN and admitted that he didn’t even know that men could get breast cancer until he was diagnosed. “So many people must die from this,” Criss said. “Somebody has to step up to the plate and say something to get them aware of how dangerous this is. Lots of men die: They wait, they don’t go in, they put it off.”
In 2007, Criss noticed a painful lump in his chest while working out. Because his wife was battling another form of cancer at the time, he didn’t hesitate to get checked out. In February 2008, doctors removed what they believed was a harmless nodule from Criss’ chest, but tests revealed that nodule was breast cancer. “I flipped out. I just couldn’t believe it. It’s a nightmare,” Criss told CNN. Another surgery in March 2008 removed the cancer, and thankfully the cancer had not spread, meaning Criss didn’t need to undergo chemotherapy.
Look back at classic Kiss photos.
Criss now gets monthly mammograms, and the breast cancer hasn’t resurfaced. According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 2,000 American men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, resulting in almost 450 deaths. “Don’t sit around playing Mr. Tough Guy. Don’t say ‘It’s going to go away.’ ” Criss tells the Kiss Army and all other men out there. “It’s just important, just go get checked out. It’s not like you’re going to lose your manhood.”

Today is Blog Action Day 2009. If you’re not a blogger, you might not be familiar with this event, but there are nearly 10,000 websites taking part. Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Their aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion. This year’s topic is climate change.
Being a musical instruments website, it took a bit of thinking to find a post topic that bridges the two together. Considering, though, that most of the instruments we play are made from wood, there is an absolute tie-in between the environment and the tools we use to make music.
We can all agree that deforestation is a major problem. I think people have done a great job in the past few years of making small changes in their lives to think environmentally, but when you have to balance the desire to be kind to the earth with buying a product you’re very passionate about, the decision is not always cut and dry.
Let’s take guitars. You’ve been saving up for that new Martin or Taylor acoustic guitar. This is your dream guitar. Maybe you remember the way your father’s Martin D28 felt in your hands, the way the body resonated against your chest, even the way the wood smelled. If you’re going to drop $3,000 on a guitar, you want it to be exactly like that. You are probably not willing to compromise quality for anything else. And why should you?
Of course, the same goes for guitar makers. When people expect the best quality product, they don’t want to compromise the materials they’re using to build it.
We musicians are a picky bunch. We love talking about wood, and the different sounds that different types and qualities of wood will create. We also like exotic woods, from the kinds of trees that people chain themselves around to protect.
So, where is the middle ground?
Believe it or not, Greenpeace has launched the Music Wood Campaign, teaming up with some of the top guitar manufactures, including Martin, Taylor, Fender, Guild, Gibson, Walden, and Yamaha. The goal is to increase the supply of woods traditionally used in the building of guitars that come from trees grown in a sustainable fashion.
For an example check out the Martin D Mahogany 09, made entirely from wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (The FSC was founded by Greenpeace and other organizations in the early 1990s, and has become the gold standard of environmental certification in the forestry industry).
So, when you’re shopping for your next dream guitar, think about where the wood has come from. With a bit of research, you can get the best of both worlds. For more info, check out The Music Wood Coalition.
Here’s a great video, produced by Taylor, documenting the Music Wood Coalition’s tour of Madagascar in 2008.

With their historic run atop the Hot 100 finally at an end, the Black Eyed Peas unveiled the newest video from The E.N.D., third single “Meet Me Halfway.” The intergalactic clip finds the Peas traveling to all ends of the universe, with Fergie crooning the chorus while lounging on a planet that resembles Ferngully. Meanwhile, Will.i.am rides an elephant across a Dune-like lunar desert, rapping, “Girl, I travel around the world and even sail the seven seas, across the universe and all the other galaxies. Just tell me where to go, where you want to meet.” It’s five minutes of CGI magic that will no doubt help “Meet Me Halfway” top the charts in the very near future.
Wolfmother’s video for the Cosmic Egg single “New Moon Rising” also premiered and — sorry Twilight fans — it has nothing to do with vampires. Instead, Andrew Stockdale and his new recruits rock out to an eye-catching kaleidoscope of psychedelic imagery and rapidfire animations. The video was directed by New Zealand’s Special Problems, and serves as a solid entry point for what you can expect to hear when Wolfmother’s Cosmic Egg is released on October 27th.
Finally, there’s the stop-motion video for Scott Weiland’s “Tangle With Your Mind.” The video might be the closest the Stone Temple Pilots frontman will ever come to starring in a romantic comedy, so we recommend you check it out above.

Lady Gaga will reportedly appear in the new video for Beyoncé’s “Video Phone,” a spokesperson for director Hype Williams confirmed to MTV. Rumors were circulating this week that Gaga was at the Greenpoint, Brooklyn, shoot for the video, even though Gaga herself doesn’t appear on the I Am… Sasha Fierce track. However, Life and Style reports that a new version of the song with Beyoncé and Gaga trading verses will feature in the video.
Check out Lady Gaga’s wildest wardrobe moments.
Not much is known about the video, which was reportedly shot October 7th, but a source tells Life and Style that “the fashion is sick and insane.” And even though the shoot was for “Video Phone,” no video phones or cameras were allowed on the closed set, MTV reports. The video will also have “lots of choreography” and “more dancers than the two girls [Beyoncé is] always with.”
The confirmation that Gaga and Beyoncé will appear together in a video comes just over a month after the two singers provided perhaps the most memorable performances at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The pair were also the most nominated VMA artists in 2009, scoring nine nods apiece.
2009 VMAs: relive the night’s big moments, in photos.
News of the “Video Phone” collabo comes just days after it was confirmed that Lady Gaga would appear on an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl. As Rolling Stone reported this morning, following the death of the Fame Kills tour, Lady Gaga announced that she’ll embark on her own Monster Ball trek in late November.

After testing out songs from their latest album Artwork on European stages, the Used are eager to introduce their new material to their fans back home in the States. Rolling Stone talked with guitarist Quinn Allman on the eve of the band’s American tour, and he told us about how changes in the past few years have helped motivate the band’s new direction.
“Before we started the new album, we parted ways with our management and knew we needed to come together. Just the four of us and no one else,” Allman says. “It helped us to strip things back to what they were in the beginning and what it’s always been about: Bert McCracken’s lyrics and our music.”
In addition to parting ways with their management, the band also replaced drummer Branden Steineckert with Dan Whitesides, who reinvigorated the band during the Artwork sessions. “Having Dan in our band has been the best thing that could’ve ever happened. He’s helped the band become stronger and tighter than ever,” Allman says. “I’ve yet to hear a more powerful, hard-hitting and articulate drummer. He’s breathed new life into not only us but the older material as well.”
The final change came when they began recording their new album without their longtime producer and mentor, John Feldmann from Goldfinger. “We went into the studio on our own and created our own vision and process, no rules or time constraints,” Allman said. “When you listen to the record I definitely think we made the right decision and were right where were supposed to be… where we wanted to be.”
Every night on tour, the Used are playing roughly 20 songs a show, with about seven songs taken from Artwork and the remaining tracks split evenly among the band’s first three albums. Additionally, each show will feature an autograph session after the show, which Allman feels is a great way to connect with the fans who have supported them the past seven years.
Following their tour of the U.S., the Used will embark on a month-long trek across the Great White North before heading to Australia in March 2010. From there, Allman says that band might tour Japan. For the Used’s U.S. itinerary, check the dates below:

After its lengthy journey that Rolling Stone documented last year, Where the Wild Things Are — the big-screen adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s book about a kid who escapes his gloomy home in search of an undiscovered island full of wild beasts — finally arrives on the big screen tomorrow.
Get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie in a gallery that compares the book’s original illustrations from 1963 with the filmmaker’s sketches and the final product: the Wild Things.
Peter Travers’ four-star review of Where the Wild Things Are praises director Spike Jonze as a “visionary” who “filmed a fantasy as if it were absolutely real, allowing us to see the world as Max sees it, full of beauty and terror.” Travers notes that the film’s power is enhanced by its songs and soundtrack. Rolling Stone has an exclusive look behind the making of the dreamy score with Jonze and co-composer Carter Burwell (click above to watch the video).
“Nothing that he does is generic. It’s all totally handcrafted to the project,” Jonze says of Burwell, who previously composed for every Coen Brothers film plus Twilight and Jonze’s Being John Malkovich. Burwell kept the music “unsophisticated.” Jonze says he asked for the musicians to play the guitar like a 5th grader would play it, devoid of vibrato and other expert techniques.
Watch Burwell’s team twirl flexible swimming-pool vacuum-cleaner tubes through the air to generate eerie, warm whooshing sounds that are “intriguing, not scary, but not familiar” in the clip. “This music shouldn’t feel like it comes from any recognizable locale or any particular time or place,” Burwell says. “And that was quite a challenge. All the music has to come from the boy’s point of view and take place in his mind.”
As Rolling Stone previously reported, Karen O and the Kids — a group of musicians led by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman that features members of bands including Deerhunter and the Dead Weather, plus an untrained children’s choir — also provided songs and soundscapes for Wild Things. “My job was to come up with simple, childlike melodies reminiscent of hooks of great old pop songs that you can’t shake,” Karen O said.
Stick with Rolling Stone for more Wild Things coverage, including an interview with author/screenwriter Dave Eggers. Plus, read Rolling Stone’s 1976 profile of Sendak.

On Sunday, rock & roll pioneer Chuck Berry will turn 83. It’s a respectable enough age for kicking up one’s heels and taking it easy, but Berry’s got a still-active touring schedule, and the duck-walking octogenarian still performs once a month at Blueberry Hill, a restaurant in his native St. Louis.
Just like clockwork last night, Berry strutted onstage at the stroke of 10 decked out in a sparkly shirt and sailor hat with that famous cherry red Gibson around his neck, nimbly ripping into the opening riff of “Roll Over Beethoven.”
Berry’s shows at Blueberry Hill take place in the restaurant’s downstairs level, a smoky basement called the Duck Room. There are only four rows of seats, making it easy for nearly everyone to be no further than 30 feet away from the man himself. The sets are hit-packed, jumping from “School Days” to “Nadine” to, yes, “My Ding-a-Ling,” the novelty record that became Berry’s sole Number One hit. “I see all those cameras lighting up on ‘My Ding-a-Ling,’ ” he joked with the audience, which gleefully sang along with the chorus.
When it comes to vocals, Berry has set aside his youthful rapid fire delivery and settled into more of a wizened storyteller sort of voice, like a winking, all-knowing grandpa. His guitar playing is still in full effect, particularly on the solo of “Rock and Roll Music,” and during a fiery take on “Reelin’ and Rockin’,” the evening’s rowdiest number. Although he’s backed up by his son on guitar, there’s no mistaking where the twang that slices through the entire mix is coming from. (And, as always, his stance on guitar tuning can be described as “arbitrary at best.”)
Berry closed the night by inviting all the ladies — young and old — onstage to dance during “Johnny B. Goode.” But when the song ended and it was time for the good nights, Berry was long gone, having slipped out the state door during the free-for-all. November’s show will be his 150th at Blueberry Hill, bringing in a fresh crowd to eat out of the palm of his hand. His age will have increased by one, but his spirits seem to have remained in high school.

Michael Jackson’s three children may appear on the upcoming reality show The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty, A&E said in a statement yesterday, all but rescinding a prior statement that said the children were “not a part of” the series. Us Weekly first revealed that the Jackson children would be featured in some capacity on the show, even though the family was at odds about it. According to Us, Michael’s older sister Rebbie “feels Michael would spin in his grave if he knew his kids would be on this show.”
Look back at Michael Jackson’s life in photos.
After A&E said that the children wouldn’t appear, the channel released a statement opening the door for Prince, Paris and Blanket’s involvement, saying, “Filming is taking place right now. As production moves forward, it is entirely possible that the brothers’ paths will intersect with other members of the Jackson family, who may or may not be included in the finished series. However, we cannot at this point definitively know who else may make an appearance in the series.”
See photos from Jackson’s This Is It rehearsals here.
The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty will reportedly begin airing in December. As Rolling Stone previously reported, the show was originally supposed to be a one-off special about the Jackson brothers attempting to reunite for a concert, but producers began taping more episodes following the death of Michael Jackson to expand it into a full series. “We have 23 cast members with the last name Jackson,” executive producer Jodi Gomes told Us. “They’ve done a great job opening up about losing a brother.”

The Band: Memory Tapes
The Buzz: Ex-member of overlooked Philly punks Hail Social, Dave Hawk writes eerie, mysterious pop songs long on atmosphere and mood. This is no hipper-than-thou niche act: Hawk was recently contacted about remixing a Michael Jackson song for a posthumous collection.
Listen If: You’re slowly getting into this whole “chillwave” thing, but wish that chilly meant “spooky” as often as it meant “remote.”
Key Track: “Green Knight,” where Hawk’s unnaturaly high voice glides over gently burbling percussion and strange, plaintive organs. It’s lovely and unsettling at the same time, like The Police’s “Wrapped Around Your Finger” sung by a choir of ghosts.
The Band: Lover!
The Buzz: In the first place, the frontman and key member’s name is Rich Crook, which is the kind of Pynchonian calling card most people make up. It also could be describing his future: cannily nabbing everything from grizzled mid-’70s garage to slowed-down surf music, Crook, as Lover!, writes the kind of scuzzy, tuneful pop that is instantly singable. It’s perhaps no surprise he used to be a member of similarly scuffed punker Jay Reatard’s band.
Listen If: Your favorite part of playing old Heartbreakers 45s is when a clump of dirt got stuck to the needle.
Key Track: The hyperactive “Worthless,” three-minutes of prattle and hum that roars by like a souped up Cadillac.
The Band: Diamond District
The Buzz: Longtime denizen of the underground Oddisee teams with MCs (and Scrabble proper-name points bonanzas) XO and YU for a record that documents the seamy underbelly of our nation’s capital, rapping about people in tight times pushed well past the breaking point.
Listen If: You don’t call it ” ’90s hip-hop,” you call it “real hip-hop.”
Key Track: The grim and grimy “Streets Won’t Let Me Chill,” where all three MCs take turns narrating a bleak day in the city over humid horns and a panicked vocal sample.

For someone who once released a double CD, Billy Corgan has had it with the album. “I was never comfortable with the album format,” Corgan tells Rolling Stone. “It always felt so forced and was obviously an economic decision made by others and not an artistic decision made by creators. It can be draining to try to record 15 songs over a six-month period.”
Smashing Pumpkins celebrate 20 years of rock in New York: photos.
True to his word, the in-progress, psychedelic-leaning Smashing Pumpkins album, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, will be released one track at a time, as free downloads, starting in late October. “No strings attached, no e-mail address need be given, no fees, nothing, totally free,” he says. “A 44-song free-for-all!” Even when it will be available physically, the format will be 11 EPs with four tracks each. “I thought it would emphasize that each song is really important to me,” he says, “and also try to get myself up to the speed of a world that is absolutely devouring information.”
Corgan says he wasn’t inspired by any similar approaches, like Radiohead’s recent move to put out singles and one album online. “I want no limitations on what I can, and will do,” he says. “I think the size and shape of the traditional album is just morphing into something much more in the moment. Four songs at a time will mean I can give my heart over to the music fully without giving away my now happy life.”
Although Corgan says he already written 53 songs, he won’t say whether he’ll be recording them with the latest edition of the Pumpkin or reveal any song titles. “The first four songs are speaking a new language to me, rooted in the psychedelic music I love but still sounding quite modern and like the Pumpkins I long to hear,” he allows. He’s also hoping to have the first track available just after Halloween.
Can Corgan, who parted ways with Warner Bros. last year, afford to give music away for free? “I can’t afford it!!” he says. “But I would rather be free than rich. The [major] labels are dead ghosts walking, and they know it. They never should have left this mystic free, because I am way more of a pied piper than they could ever fathom.”

Depeche Mode were onstage earlier this week during their second of four shows south of the Equator when frontman Dave Gahan ended “Never Let Me Down Again,” grabbed his microphone and shouted, “Thank you very much Chile!” to the audience at Explanada del Estadio Monumental. One problem, though: Explanada del Estadio Monumental is not in Chile. It’s in Lima, Peru.
To Gahan’s credit, the band is playing Santiago, Chile, tonight, October 15th, so the mistake wasn’t totally unwarranted. Any touring band will tell you the space-time continuum becomes a blurry mess after a few nights on the tour bus — in fact, this kind of mishap happens more often than you’d think. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this isn’t the first time Peru has been mistaken for one of its neighbors. In 2003, Alanis Morissette said “Thank you Brazil,” even though she, too, was in Peru. And earlier this year, threesome fan Britney Spears greeted fans in San Jose with, “What’s up, Sacramento!”
This week, we look at the clinics and masterclasses coming up at PASIC 2009 in Indianapolis, IN. The Double Drag Tap is the rudiment of the week, we talk about the recent Sabian Vault Tour in the news, and the legendary Buddy Rich is the drummer of the week. Show Notes

For someone who classifies himself as a “geek,” Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo sure is spending a lot of time hanging out with the cool kids: In a word-association interview with Buzznet, Cuomo revealed he’s collaborating with Katy Perry in the near future. “We’re writing together next week. Can’t wait,” Cuomo said. It’s unclear what the “Tired of Sex” and “I Kissed a Girl” stars will be concocting, but it’s possible the fruits of their collaboration may appear on Perry’s follow-up to One of the Boys.
As Rolling Stone previously reported, Cuomo has been feeling quite collaborative lately. He recruited Lil Wayne to join his Raditude posse for the Jermaine Dupri-produced version of the song “Can’t Stop Partying.” The dictionary-defying album also finds the Weezer gang collaborating with the All-American Rejects’ Tyler Ritter and Nick Wheeler on “Put Me Back Together.” 30 seconds clips of Raditude are now streaming over at iTunes, where fans can also sign up for the iTunes Pass to get exclusive tracks.
Cuomo’s word-association interview yielded a few more terrific moments: upon hearing the name of Transformers actress and Rolling Stone cover star Megan Fox, Cuomo replied, “Don’t know who that is.” (Perhaps these photos of Fox will jog his memory.) The Weezer frontman also responded to the terms “Geeks” and “Rock Star” with “Rivers Cuomo.” And Cuomo is very excited to see Where the Wild Things Are, directed by the mastermind behind the “Buddy Holly” video, Spike Jonze.

Exactly two weeks after Lady Gaga and Kanye West’s Fame Kills Tour was canceled, The Fame singer has revealed the dates for her solo jaunt, called The Monster Ball Tour. “The Haus of Gaga had been designing ‘The Monster Ball’ for premiere in 2010 at the O2 Arena in London, but due to diligent work and preparation, ‘The Monster Ball’ will begin on November 27 in Montreal,” Gaga wrote on her official Website. ” ‘The Monster Ball’ is a multimedia artistic experience in the style of the first-ever ‘pop electro opera.’ ”
Check out Lady Gaga’s wildest wardrobe moments.
The 22-date trek finds Gaga performing at much smaller, more intimate venues than those that were booked for the Fame Kills Tour. For example, instead of performing at Uniondale, New York’s Nassau Coliseum, the Monster Ball Tour will wrap up with Gaga performing two hometown shows at Radio City Music Hall. Gaga has been a staple at New York’s more famous theaters in recent months, performing at Radio City during the VMAs and then Carnegie Hall for the all-star An Evening with Gavin Friday & Friends benefit concert.
“A message to all my little monsters: The Fame Monster will come out four days before the first live show. You have exactly 96 hours to learn all of the lyrics so you can sing along,” Gaga writes. “Dress accordingly.”

Dean’s a busy guy these days (with things like this, this and this to name a few) so we surely appreciate him takin’ some time out for FTR (thanks again, Dean!).
And just to re-cap, for those of you unfamiliar with For the Record, this is our semi-regular web feature wherein we (or a generous artist like Dean, Mat, Marty or Scott) reflect on one of our favorite records from the Sub Pop catalog and in turn, said record is dramatically discount for the following 48 hours.
Make Sense? Yes? Good. Now let’s hear about Wolf Eyes!
Band: Wolf Eyes
Record: Burned Mind
When we told you the first time: September 28th, 2004
This record is fantastic! It’s not for the weak though, it starts and ends with a harsh noise ear assault courtesy of the the Wolf Eyes.
Parts remind me of Throbbing Gristle if they were pissed, other parts are like Man is the Bastard if they had no instruments, or Negative Approach with the guitars effected and the drums taken out of the mix and replaced with broken oscillators. Sound good? Then you should check it out – it may cause you to pick up a Behringer mixing board and some pedals and make a limited cassette.
-Dean
