I just thought it would be interesting if everyone would post WHO or WHAT is their inspiration to Drumming.
I’ll kick it off, for me it is:
Who: Danny Carey of Tool, Neil Pert of Rush, Travis Barker of Blink-182/BoxCar Racer, Carter Beauford of Dave Matthews, Jon Fishman of Phish, and Chris Culos of O.A.R. to name a few of the “Famous ones”
One of my best friends Cory, and an old bandmate Daniel Duran, All the jazz drummers I listened to at my grandpartents growing up that I never got to learn the names of.
What: The feeling I get from simply listening to music, especially where the drums shine. It is almost a Primal urge for me. The VERY first time I heard Tympani’s!!! They struck so deep. All of the High School marching band performances I have been able to see. The Drum Line always made me feel alive. Every live concert I have been to where the bass drum kicks you in the chest and just getting to watch a talented drummer LIVE in person… and so much more.
Depending on the response I may post it in the Forums if it will receive more exposure there because I think this could be a great way for all of us to Connect with one another and Find out about some new drummers/bands.
Lets Here It Everyone !!

I just started with percussion, something about the snare drum and hearing the snare caught my attention. That was in 3rd grade, now I'm playing in combo's at the college.
At the moment the two drummers that I'm looking at are David Weckl and Matt Grenier.

Who: Jordan Mancino of As I Lay Dying, Alex Lopez of Suicide Silence, Matt Greiner of August Burns Red, Adam Gray of Texas in July, Lance Garvin of Living Sacrifice, Jason Costa of All that Remains, Derek Roddy, and Buddy Rich.
What: The pure energy of it. Turning a beat into a piece of art. Listening to the sound and not being able to sit still.

I get inspired by any drummer who can lay a groove,Throw in his chops in and make the music sound fantastic. Especially funk and jazz drummers. Where I live there are not many places to see an exceptional band. So I watch youtube alot.

The first was classmate Tony Hicks in elementary school. He was already great in the fourth grade. I asked him once how he got so good, to which he replied, "just drum on anything, man." I started there and never stopped. Then I caught a glimpse of Metallica's video for "One." I couldn't believe how much fun it looked. I was totally hooked from then on. The rest is history. Danny Carey of Tool, Neil Pert, and Nicko McBrain (of Iron Maiden) among others, all helped to solidify my love of the drums. Currently, I'm digging on the beats of Chris Adler of Lamb of God, that dude can play something fierce.

I agree, Lars is an amazing drummer even if he is a piece of crap of a person lol I completely forgot to ad him because he truly was one of my great inspirations to rock/heavy drumming when I was just a small kid. Also you are not kidding about Chris Adler and he seems to be such a cool guy to. You should check him out on the 2005 Moder Drummer Festival DVD. Should be able to YouTube his video.

No problem man. I have seen his full set at the Festival and it's great.. includes interview and everything. To see the full thing on YouTube unfortunately you have to pay for it. If you ever come across a copy of the 2005 ModerDrummer Festival for a decent price pick it up. It was a great festival with a large variety and some AMAZING performances.

My first big inspiration came in the form of an Omar Hakim instructional dvd. I was 12 years old and I'd never seen anything like it before in my life. I realized what was actually possible on the drums and it blew my mind.
Then followed the usual suspects..dennis chambers, steve gadd, vinnie c, dave weckl, david garibaldi.
I'd also like to say anyone who is really into the drums and the music. Seeing them light up on a stage when they play fills me with inspiration.
Great question visioncrys!

I cut my teeth on jazz, rock (both hard and soft), country, classical, marches (Sousa), and blues.
I love Peter Gabriel era Genesis (although Duke and Trick Of The Tail are exceptionally good), King Crimson especially with Bill Bruford, (up to Three Of A Perfect Pair). Allison Krauss, American Death, Herb Alpert, any blues guy named King, Beatallica (I used to be in a cover band with one of the members back in the 90's), Billie Holiday, Cake, Ella Fitzgerald, Booker T. and The MG's, The Carpenters (She was an exceptional drummist you know).....I could go on and on and on but as I always say.... "So many influences, so little time..."

I forgot another big influence. Keith Moon of the Who. I absolutely love his free form style of drumming.
As a person... not so much... another stereotypical musician that was brilliant that instead of adding a sense of integrity to musicians he just stripped it away with he egocentric lifestyle.
None the less he is still one of my favorite drummers of all time.
