I recently installed some overhead tripods for my Sony cameras on my drum kits. I wanted to share with you the equipment I used, so hopefully you can hook one up as well!

There's a couple of different tripod options you have, first is a wall-mount "Manfrotto" brand tripod. It screws in with two screws and can hang on the wall versus the ceiling.

You can purchase this tripod on Amazon.com for $47.82 right now. I have not used this one, but as a cheaper alternative to the materials I chose, I figured I would give you some options. Next, lets look at the tripod that I'm using in the Drum Room:

I'm using the Davis & Sanford WB8 Wall and Celiing Mount tripod. This tripod runs 149.95, is very adjustable and very durable.  It can be mounted in the Ceiling or in the wall.

The next step was to locate a spot on my wall above my drums and screw this thing in. I started off by marking the holes in my tripod base on the ceiling, then with a 5/8" drill bit I drilled the holes for my hollow-wall Toggle Bolts.  Toggle bolts, which can be found at almost any hardware store, allow you to drill into a hollow wall or ceiling and externally mount devices such as the tripod we're mounting up without having to go into your attic or put some kind of fastner on the other end of the bold. Simply put, these things are life savers.

Once I fastened in the base of the tripod to the ceiling, I mounted up my Sony DCR-h52 MiniDV Handycam Camcorder to my Mac via Firewire and I was ready to record live on DrummerConnection.com with a groovy overhead shot!

Remember if you're running firewire cables, you probably want to get something long enough to reach your computer. Here's what I used:

This cable is 10 Meters (30 Feet) but will not plug directly into your MiniDV camera, so yo may also need an adapater:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=IEEE+1394+Firewire+Adapter+6+Pin+Female+to+6+Pin+Female&x=0&y=0

The adapter above is an IEE 1395 6-Pin Femail to 4 Pin Male adapter. Simply put, this adapter adapts your 30 foot Firewire cable to your camera's MiniDV port so you can plug it right in.  If you need to extend a Firewire 400 cable (say you have two smaller ones), you can also use one of these adapters:

Good luck and have fun with your Tripods / Cameras! Here's a video I did with my newly mounted tripod and camera:

You are very welcome! The camera I mentioned above is a great starting point for around $300 bucks. It's the cheapest firewire camera I can find that can plug into my computer and record.

Have fun!
