Valentine’s Day weekend I attended the FFCC Seminole Visual Spectacular hosted by Seminole High School. The FFCC offers a competitive outlet during the winter season for color guard, indoor marching percussion and concert percussion units. The indoor marching season starts in January and concludes at the FFCC Circuit Championships in early April. Last year was the first time I was exposed to this but unfortunately it was at the tail end of the season. This year I plan on providing more articles and pictures from some of the more local events.
The day began with me travelling to Countryside High School to visit our good friend and Countryside staff member Chris Carbonaro. Since his coverage of the Winter NAMM Show Chris has been busy helping to prepare his drum line for the competition ahead. Countryside is looking to make their presence felt in 2009 as they come off a strong finish from last year’s FFCC Championships with many returning members from the ’08 season-including the entire snare line. I was invited to go down early and catch a sneak peak of this year’s show which highlights music from the progressive rock band YES. Being so early in the season all the FFCC percussion ensembles are still making constant adjustments to their marching drills in order to ensure each performance is at its best. Developing a show from scratch in coordination with a custom marching drill involving music, movement, and art is a HUGE undertaking to say the least. Many frustrations can arise when putting it all together but in the end everyone included understands that THIS is what it’s all about-setting personal differences aside to focus on the show first. As the season progresses I look forward to future competitions and witnessing Countryside and the other ensembles mature throughout the year. Here are just a few of the practice shots:
Once finished, all of the schools gathered for the awards ceremony before heading out to prepare for next week’s competition. For the complete list of scores you can visithttp://www.ffcc.org/event.php?ID=110#
Great job to all who performed and stay tuned within the next few weeks for more continued coverage of FFCC and WGI events.
