The music world has lost a great mentor, and friend as Louie Bellson passed away on Valentine’s Day at age the age of 84. The cause of death is still unknown at this time. On January 28, Bellson had been released from a hospital, where he had been recovering from a broken hip, and was reportedly undergoing physical therapy as part of a rehabilitation regimen. A funeral is planned for Los Angeles, and Bellson will be buried in his home of town Moline, Illinois.
Louie Bellson has been described by his peers as an amiable person and one of the most remarkable musicians to ever to pick up a pair of sticks. At age 17, he triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Slingerland National Gene Krupa Contest. Bellson then went on to lead a long and distinguished career as he wrote, taught, performed, and recorded hundreds of musical works with some of the greatest professionals within the industry. Although he will be missed his legacy will continue to inspire many generations to come.
Every time I see an enormous double-bass drum kit with umpteen toms, I think about how every drummer has probably wondered where it all came from. Most would instinctively think of it as a trend started by the early pioneers of rock, or devised by some expert panel resulting from years of R & D. Nobody would have guessed it was a 15 year old jazz musician who took the credit for incorporating two kick drums, but Louie Bellson was a man far ahead of his time who had a vision for his instrument that would not only change the look of drums, but the art of drumming itself forever!

I too have been priviledged enough to have met Louie and he did have a huge impact on the development of the modern drum set. As teachers/drum educators/drummers, we all owe it to pass on information about the greats to the youth. With out a knowledge of where we came from we can't really know where we are. God Bless Louie for his accomplishments and for sharing his gifts with us all, and bless his family during this difficult time. PeAcE. . . .

Louie Bellson has and will continue to pave the way for modern day drumming. Like walking the step of the Empire State Building, you can't reach the top without taking the first few steps. The first few steps were constructed by Louie and other early pioneers of the drum set. As drummers in this community we should take the time to learn our past history and should not forget the great drummers of the past. Have you ever seem Tony Williams play as a teenager? Or early Billy Cobham early stuff? When ever a beginner gets his or her first double pedal they might be curious to know who's foot steps they're following. (Besides Slipnot, Joey's got feet)

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Bellson a few times over the years. He was a great man, a pioneer and a visionary in the drumming world that we all live in. Many of us owe a lot to this man. I want to thank Mr. Bellson for taking the time to have a drink with me and share some great stories. Thank you and God Bless your family.
