Need an opinion on a kit

Silent_Jay - Thu, 05/21/2009 - 21:30

Hey, I've been looking into buying an acoustic kit. I'm not very satisfied with my Simmons SD7K. It's a good kit, I just want more from my drums I guess. I found this one at Guitar Center used and wanted to see what ya'll think: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gretsch-Drums-Blackhawk-5-piece-Fusion-Drum-Set-with-20--Bass-Drum--Liquid-Black--Scratch-n-Dent-582430-i1447958.gc
If you want to make suggestions for a different kit, here is what I'm looking for in a nutshell: I play rock and metal; I want to have at least 2 rack toms and at least one floor tom (though more is always better), it doesn't need to come with a bass pedal as I already have one (as well as a double pedal), also I'll need all the hardware and all the cymbals (hi-hat, crash, and ride). Also, quick question: a lot of you said the Gretsch Catalina Club Kit would be a good kit, but it only has one rack tom, so what I was going to ask was if it would be possible to just add another tom to that and how? Kinda new to all this if you didn't know. Anyway, any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks, that looks really nice and that free floor tom makes the deal so much more enticing. I'll definitely consider this one thanks.

Yeah and also check out what Pacific by DW has to offer as far as drum kits go because they have some really nice sounding drums with either 100% Maple or Birch shells!

Well if your in the Gretsch department, check this kit out : http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gretsch-Drums-Catalina-Maple-Fusion-Shell-Pack-with-Free-16-Floor-Tom?sku=483246

It's got alot more and the shells are much better quality for the money spent. Maple wood gets a much warmer and deeper tone, which is good for rock/metal playing. As far as hardware you can get some Pacific by DW stands because they are pretty much as good as any sand out there, and depending on how much you wanna spend you can either get a cymbal pack, or get some real cymbals by buy something that isn't a sheet cymbal (ZBT's,ZHT's, B8's etc..)

It's all about finding the best band for the buck, that's what I'v been doing since I started getting an ear for quality equipment. Hope this helps!
