Hey Everyone Wish Me Luck

I play in the school band that plays at concerts and at football games, but since I'm a junior the senior always gets first dibs on set. So I have no set experience with all the songs. But now he's going to miss the game along with every other drummer. So I'm going to be the lone drummer keeping the beat with songs I barely have an idea how to play. I'm listening to the original versions now in the hopes I can improv and read my conductors transitions and cuts because our songs are usually shorter, and slightly different. I need the support. Thanks I'll comment how it went when I get home today. Some of the songs are Surfaris - Wipe Out, 25 or 6 to 4 and tequila. the other are just pep songs like the spirit song or the hey song.

Wish ya best of luck, I'm sure you'll do great. I had the same situation happen to me when I was a sophomore in the jazz band, the junior had the dibs even though he wasn't so great of a drummer which is stupid. But when I got my chance, it made me super nervous because it was my chance to be part of everything and hold the whole band together. Just pay attention to what's going on and try to be loose when you play, that way everything comes out like you aren't nervious cause you can tell when a drummer is tensed up!

Blast beats throughout the entire game! YEAH >.<
No just kidding man, best suggestion, keep the beat and if you have to, throw in a couple cool rolls.
Talk to your teacher about the seniors getting dibs, cause that is pretty screwed in my opinion, because their careers are progressing and you have to wait because you are younger...?
Drums/Percussion should be a fair thing at all times, if they can't buy another kit for the juniors, then the seniors who are older and should have a job by now... should bring in their own kit/equipment instead of using the school's.
That's my opinion because of my narrow-mindedness about you getting screwed over on playing time and experience. What, you are supposed to have one-year experience behind the kit if you follow the path into college?
Who could you blame? The teacher? Or the other student...? You couldn't do either because the college would believe it was your own fault and then place you into classes you don't need to be...
Idk, hope it goes well. Play it to the best and play it with heart.

Yeah I ended up playing good, one of the other drummers decided to show up but I still played set and we got a few compliments. Thanks for the supports and tips I really needed it. I kept it nice and simple and did I few pretty powerful fills. So over all it was great. I had a great time, it really helped with my improv skills.

I agree just keep time...One gig is worth ten practice sessions...you can do it man...pressure is good, it builds charactor and confidence...all of those songs are great old tunes with a very basic two/one beat on the snare and pretty much straight beat on the bass with a lot of crash cymbal...HAVE FUN..
