Suggestions on Single Ply Heads

Jon Nichols - Fri, 09/25/2009 - 18:54 | 2,663 views

Been wanting to go to a single ply head after using pinstripes for years and then onto Evans ec-2's for the past year or so. Any suggestions on a durable, great sounding clear single ply head. I'm not partial to brand either. Just curious what the popular choice is.

It's a shame you want clear. Remo's Vintage A Ambassador skins sound particularly amazing for single-ply coated.

Either way, Remo Ambassador, top and bottom, all the way if you have a kit of worthy construction. The clear single ply will resonate a LOT. If you have a mid-range to low-end kit, I would suggest either the Ambassador coated or Emperor clear. They will tighten up the sound a bit where the kit will lack in focus.

I just looked at your pics and saw the Mapex. Quite honestly, I think the Ambassador clears will do whatever you need of them for sure (especially with a half strip of Moon Gel).

Just to add...
The reason why I didn't suggest Evans is because they tend to sound like Evans. I have found that kits skinned with Remo have more variety in their sound. Honestly, I have heard a Tama Starclassic sound all too similar to a Pearl Export when they were both skinned with Genera G2's.
Sorry Evans fans! But the only thing I really like is the EMAD, which, even though it sounds great, tends to break WAY easier than any of my Superkicks.

I use old reliable: Remo Weather King Ambassador.

They do the job and they're cheap. On my drums they're just fine.

Oh, except on the bass. I always use a PowerStroke 3 on the batter side, Ambassador on the front.

$0.02, no change required. :-)

I have Black Remo's with white pinstripes their non coated though so I'm just a tiny bit displeased with the sound but at the same time they are louder so that's a plus can annoy my neighbors better :)

Umm I would try either Remo coated Ambassadors or Evans G1 Coated. I'm just a fan of coated because it gets a little warmer sound :]

I have had great sound w/the Evans G1 CTD on my toms. Gives a much more warm sound and rim shots sound great on them, too.

Hey jon, if your looking for a good single ply head, the popular choice would b e the remo Ambassador CTD or CLR. You can also try the Evans G1 CTD or CLR. You cannot go wrong with those, they both have great sound and life. As far as the aquarians, attacks and all that jazz....??? idk haven't used any. But give the evans or remo a try and you wont be bummed. Good suggestion on the drum muffles dude, it will indeed make your kit sound b e a u t i f u l.

Remo's man!
Powerstroke 3 for the your bass kick or kicks
And weather-king for your toms and floor toms
Then a white ambassador coat snare skin

Get yourself some drum muffles as well, it makes the sound so beautiful!

Trust me man, do it. Remo has great deals!
