I just get the sound guy to leave the drum monitor subwoofer turned on. If you do that, you should be able to feel everything that need, especially if the riser is made of those pole things or if it is made of plywood.

The vic firth phones are a great for monitoring, but i heard sometimes they go bad and start cutting out.

The Vic Firths don't really have a low end. I've been using these for a couple years now quite a bit (every day actually) and they are mostly high range and mids. I think you're suppose to mix your volume down to where you can actually hear your drums from the real drumset, not the mix. A tip a friend of mine gave me was to only put a little overheads in your monitor mix so that you can hear the attack of your drums and the rest of the mix should fill up.

Another solution, one that I'm itching to try and soon will is the ButtKicker.
