Drum mics and mixer? Need help

IDRUM77 - Mon, 07/20/2009 - 16:12 | 9,247 views

Hello,
I am looking for some good drums mics and a mixer that wont break the bank or sound like a dying cat. I play in a heavy metal band and we are about to record our music and play some shows. I was looking at some Peavey Mics and mixers and saw a package type thing that comes with theses mics;1 Snare,3 toms,1 BassDrum. Would that be good enough for everything? And the mixers is the Peavey PV 14. It seems pretty cool but only has 12 inputs. 10 mics inputs. but i need like 7 or 8 of them. Please help me with a mixer that can ATLEAST have up to 15.
well thanks,
Austin

It all depends on how big your kit is really...?

I use the Peavey P-14 as well and using CAD for drum-mics, they do a nice fine job for recording. You can check some tunes out on my page just to get the idea of what I am talking about.

Especially Drumsolo1 that will have all of your basic drum-sounds for a "heavy-metal" sounding kit.
Although I am running 8 drum mics (2 bass drums being I play on a double-bass kit---not just double pedal. 2 Snare mics *one for my snare and the other set for low-tone on the mixer for the floor toms* and 4 tom mics. *used to record my 3 roto toms and 3 toms* and 2 overhead mics to pick up on cymbals)
All this to record a 31 piece kit.

What do you plan to use for a mixing program...? Sonar 6 XL and above is awesome, try to go for Pro-Tools if you want to go all out for mixing/production (your band would totally love you!)

It cost me about either cause it was a while ago when I purchased the stuff was I think around like $500 to $600.

Hope it all helps bro!

get used shure sm57's and a beta 52, or try the sennheiser e602 on the kick, which i prefer. mackie makes good analog mixers for the money. I you are recording yourself, your will need a firewire interface, which the mackie onyx series has built in. buy used when possible.

Check out the Shure Drum Mic pack. It has a very nice Shure Beta 52 and some Shure SM57's. The 57's can be used on toms, snares, even batter side kick for more punch.

This is the higher end:
http://www.shure.com/proaudio/products/wiredmicrophones/us_pro_pgdmk6-xlr_content

But they have cheaper mic packs.

as for overheads, I would recommend some AKG C1000's. http://www.akg.com/site/products/powerslave,id,759,pid,759,nodeid,2,_language,EN.html I record with these on my overheads all the time. They run somewhere around $100 - $200 each and I recommend two of them.

As for a mixer, any 16 channel analog mixer will do. You will have room for all your mics, guitar, bass, and a few other channels. I use the Yamaha ones you can pick up at any Sam Ash or Guitar Center for analog recording.

If you want to go digital and get some multi-track recordings going, you can check out some of MOTU's firewire product lines. They have some very nice gear that we use all the time as well, such as MOTU 896MK3's.

The real bitch of it all is the mic cables. These can quickly add up to the same price as your microphones. A cheap mic cable is going to give you lousy sound and will quickly deteriorate when you start moving around and gigging alot, so spend the money and get the good cables, or get a SNAKE which is an awesome way to route your cables.

I don't know how much your bank is, but you're looking at an easy $1,000 bucks to get a descent setup, probably a little more factoring in cables and microphone stands if you do it right. You can check Pawn shops as well, people hock this kind of stuff all the time, so shop around!

Don't forget to check out sites like Amazon.com and MusciansFriend.com or GuitarCenter.com and see what you can find. Amazon has some killer deals and you can usually save a few bucks and get it a helluva lot faster than Musicians Friend will deliver. I've had nothing but headaches from MF on shipping, backorders and delays.

Have fun!
