PAS Drum Competition
The
Percussive Arts Society (PAS) has launched a new drumset competition to
encourage and support young musical drumset artists, with emphasis on
the performer's ability to support and guide a small ensemble for young
artists between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two.
Following an
initial round of ...judging by respected drummers from a variety
of styles, twelve finalists will be invited to compete at the
organization’s annual PASIC convention this November in Indianapolis.
Following the final round of competition, six winners will be selected,
and each will receive a $1,000 cash prize. Drummers will be split into
two age categories, fourteen to seventeen and eighteen to twenty-two.
For the first round of competition, drumset artists are encouraged to
send the Percussive Arts Society a six-minute DVD video audition
showcasing their skills in one of the following three style categories:
R&B/funk/gospel, jazz, or Brazilian/Afro-Cuban/African.
The
first round of competition will be judged by Ndugu Chancler, David
Garibaldi, and Tommy Igoe, who will judge the R&B/funk/gospel
category; Terri Lyne Carrington, Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, and Ed
Soph, who will judge the jazz category; and Gregg Bissonette, Jimmy
Branly, Walfredo Reyes Jr., and Bobby Sanabria, who will judge the
Brazilian/Afro-Cuban/African category. All participants who register and
send a DVD audition will receive written comments from a judge.
From
the initial round of competition, twelve individuals (two winners from
each age group for each style category) will be selected to compete in
the second round of competition at PASIC on Thursday, November 11, 2010,
in Indianapolis, Indiana. Finalists will be required to perform with a
live ensemble and will be judged by a panel of accomplished drumset
artists on their ability to support and guide the group. The final round
will be open for all PASIC attendees to watch the performances and hear
educational feedback from the panel of judges.
Full
competition information, including registration information and DVD
video format instructions, is available online at
www.pas.org/experience/contests/drumsetcompetition.aspx. The deadline to apply is May
15, 2010.
