When I walked into Seminole Music & Sound, the store was already starting to fill up with people a whole hour before the clinic! The store was layed out nicely, with an area dedicated for Casey's drums.
Casey's drum kit for the clinic was different than his usual setup, consisting of a basic four-piece Pearl Vision kit. He also used his two Pearl Reference snares from his new kit. As always, his cymbal setup was plentiful and diverse. Boasting all new Zildjian's, including his 20” Zildjian Earth Ride which he has had for over 12 years.

Starting off the clinic with a song from the show “Cirque du Soleil”, he brought his own style into the song by adding his metal influence with intricate double bass playing. “This song really didn't have drums, it just had more percussive parts”, Casey explains after playing to the music. Soon after he played through a Kamlot tune, amazing everyone with his double bass chops and showmanship.
After rocking out to a Kamelot tune, he takes some questions from the audience about of his gear, personal preferences, and some history on his playing.
Casey explains what pedals he uses, and the odd-ball settings he has. He uses Pearl Eliminator double pedals, with a red cam on the right side, and a blue cam on the left side. It's all about personal preference, and how comfortable you are on your pedal. “You would be surprised to know how fast you can go” says Casey as he demonstrates that you must experiment with your pedals in every way possible to find the “sweet spot”.
After some questions, Casey showed that he's not just a metal drummer by playing to a Latin-style music track. He did a bang up-job, using his side snare as a timbale, and even throwing is own signature style into the drum breaks. Soon after, he wraps up the clinic with another Kamelot tune.
The turn out for the clinic was great as many people came out, with a guest celebrity appearance by John Blackwell, as well as Paul Quin; attorney for both Casey Grillo and John Blackwell. John was even caught wearing Drummer Connection swag!
Please give it up to John Spinelli and everyone at Seminole Music & Sound for putting on a great clinic last night. Great Job!
