Last year drummers across the nation made history by taking part in The Big Beat Event! Founded by Five Star Drum Shops and sponsored by just about every major drum manufacturer and magazine publication there is, last year's event was nothing short of a tremendous success! Billed as one of the worlds largest multi-city drum events, last year's event drew 1286 drummers and over 4000 spectators in nine cities, raised more than $45,000 for music and other charities and collected 7000 pounds of food. All money collected will benefit the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation.
Founded in 1996, MHOF donates new and refurbished musical instruments to underserved schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide, in an effort to give youngsters the many benefits of music education, help them to be better students and inspire creativity and expression through playing music. Since its inception, MHOF programs have benefited more than 500,000 students and have enabled hundreds of dedicated teachers to provide a better learning experience in school.
This year I was once again invited by Jeff Lee and his wonderful staff at Resurrection Drums for The Big Beat 2009 in Hollywood, FL. Flying solo this year I was more than happy to oblige them by representing Drummer Connection at the Hollywood's Fastest Drummer Booth - hosted by yours truly. I want to personally thank Cleve Alleyne of Stick Gripps for donating his awesome grips and providing samples for all the contestants - while they lasted! For those who didn't receive a pair you can purchase them at stickgripps.com, Chad Sexston's Drum City, and your local California Guitar Center Stores - soon to be Nationwide!
In the end it was last years returning champion Chris Mignacea who once again claimed the title of fastest drummer and took home the grand prize donated by Resurrection Drums - A DW 8000 DOUBLE PEDAL!
Drummers from all across the state of Florida came out once again to participate. Throughout the day we were treated to several spectacles such as teen bands from the local area, the high school drumline competition, all out jam sessions, and William Stewart returning once again to deliver another informative and entertaining drumming workshop. An accomplished musician and educator, William is more famously known for being a member of the acclaimed reggae band Inner Circle.
Later on there were clinics and performances by Russ Miller, Derek Roddy, and Richard Bravo who closed out the event after the World Record attempt.
I would once again like to thank Jeff Lee and the staff of Resurrection Drums, Stick Gripps, and all the participants that came out and donated to support the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation and other local charities. We'll see you guys again next year!
