Nov 2nd would mark a day that would go down in history as Resurrection Drums and Five Star Drum Shops would host The 2008 Big Beat Event. The idea was not only to set a new world record for most people playing the same beat at the same time, but to also to raise money for the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation.
Founded in 1996, The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation donates new and refurbished musical instruments to undeserved schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide, in an effort to give youngsters the many benefits of music education, help them to be better students and inspire creativity and expression through playing music.
Because of the financial and in-kind support of concerned and motivated music lovers, hundreds of thousands of young people have new opportunities and experiences available to them. They have been given something that will generate lifelong benefits and memories. Teachers, parents and those in their community see every day how much this simple thing, giving a child an instrument to play, can change their life forever.
This event was going to be HUGE! This was one of nine locations nationwide that would be participating this year making it the biggest turnout ever! Here alone at The Arts Park there were over 100 drum kits assembled in one area to raise awareness and promote organized chaos. Looking to best the previous record of 533 by Donn Bennett Drum Studio, this wasn't going to be an easy undertaking by any means. Not being able to handle it alone, I called on Drummer Connection's closest friend and consultant..........the mighty Chris Carbanaro!
If you think being at a local music store was crazy once everyone gets banging on the drums, this video is just the tip of the iceberg.
We arrived to set up along with the other participants inside the massive tent structure at the beautiful Arts Park located in Hollywood,FL. There were many different kits from all walks of life as prizes were awarded in such categories as : Largest kit, most unusual, and best vintage kit.
There were also many other raffle items to be won provided by the ladies of Resurrection Drums. Tons of cool gear and prize packs, with all proceeds going to charity.
Even with the scattered storms it was an amazing turnout as people showed up from across the state to be a part of this world record event, but that wasn't he only entertainment lined up for the day. Audience members were treated to performances by some of the local bands and several high school drum lines, all of which were very impressive. Also, there were performances by metal sensation Derek Roddy, The Southern Latin All Stars, and former percussionists from 3rd World, Inner Circle, and a fabulous Taiko group which still follows the traditions of this ancient art. There was also a guest appearance by Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden who came in to help lead the masses in breaking the World Record. Here is a quick vid of everyone warming up to “We Will Rock You”.
Although the rain didn't permit us to hold a contest for fastest feet, the fastest hands competition was a great success! All age groups turned out to test their skill while setting new personal goals for themselves and just having a good time heckling their friends.
Unfortunately with all the commotion afterwards some of the our winners left the event before claiming there prizes. But there were other contestants that took home other prizes such as Drummer Connection hats, t-shirts, autographed mouse pads by Derek Roddy and several pairs of Vater drumsticks signed by artist John Blackwell. Since John has recently signed with Zildjian these sticks will no longer be available which now makes them a rare commodity.
Once all was organized and in place it was time to get down to business. The final preparations were made the moment we've all been waiting for was now at hand. We were going to break the World Record! The clock started and everyone was playing the predetermined beat that would be synchronized at 8 other locations across the nation.
Although the official announcement has not been made the unofficial announcement is this....WE HAVE A NEW WORLD RECORD!!!! Exact numbers have not been confirmed as all stores involved are still recuperating from this massive effort-- sources claim that history was made on November 2nd, 2008.
As everything winded down we were sure to thank Jeff Lee and the staff of Resurrection Drums for allowing us to be here for this extraordinary musical accomplishment. Be sure to sing up for next years event as well be sure to see everyone again for food, fun, and support of the musical arts to keep programs alive in all area schools.
