2008 Zildjian Road Show

Date: 03/21/2010 | by webadmin | Viewed 10500 times

Last week Drums2Go had the honor of having Zildjian’s Chief Cymbal Designer Paul Francis stop by as part of Zildjian's 2008 Roadshow Tour. This Tour represents Zildjian's commitment to excellence by allowing consumers to have total access to Paul to ask questions on anything and everything they have to offer. Also, people will have an opportunity to play and purchase some rare prototype cymbals which you won't find anywhere else. Here below Eric Rosebrock and Paul Francis pictured with a one of a kind 23" Inch Armand Ride from the Sound Lab Prototype cymbals they brought on the show. You won't be seeing these cymbals in catalogs or stores near you, as most of them will remain unreleased.

Paul first started with Zildjian sweeping floors in the factory over two decades ago. Throughout the years his persistence and passion for music and led him to seek new standards for Zildjian and visualize where the company would be headed for the next generation of musicians. And as a gigging musicain for over 30 years Paul knows first hand what his customers have come to expect from their cymbals. Here are a few clips of Paul answering some questions about himself and the Zildjian family.

Cymbals are a drummer’s most important asset. Although drum tuning is important good cymbals are a key ingredient in developing the signature sound of the artist. There are many different drum companies around, and once you reach a certain standard of quality, with the right experience you can tune all drums sound VERY similar to each other. For example, you can make a Pearl Export sound like a true maple or birch kit. It's just a matter of head selection, proper mic placement, and tuning. You will NEVER make a ZBT sound like a Zildjian A Custom. You really do get what you pay for and a lot of people tend to sell themselves short by overlooking this important detail. But don't take my word for it, listen to Paul explain the process of how these beautiful Zildjian Cymbals are made.

Unfortunately we weren't able to stick around for the crash test but now you can see for yourself that even in it's raw form, the original casting produces a tone. This is the foundation for EVERY professional cymbal Zildjian makes as it goes from the casting to the final product pictured below.

Although we had to leave early we extracted as much info out of Paul as we could. If you have a chance to catch the Roadshow as it comes your way make sure to do so. Be sure to check out Drummer Connections Featured Video for more footage of Paul awnsering questions on craftsmanship, technique and cleaning tips. We would also like to thank Shane, Michelle, and all the staff at Drums2Go for not only inviting us, but allowing us to shoot video for all those who couldn't attend.   When I walked into Seminole Music & Sound, the store was already starting to fill up with people a whole hour before the clinic! The store was layed out nicely, with an area dedicated for Casey's drums. Casey's drum kit for the clinic was different than his usual setup, consisting of a basic four-piece Pearl Vision kit. He also used his two Pearl Reference snares from his new kit. As always, his cymbal setup was plentif ... more »
