Proper throne height and style can go a long way toward easing your aching back.
My chiropractor suggested a throne with a back. I'm now using a Roc-n-Soc tractor seat throne. He also suggested setting the throne height so that the bottoms of my thighs are parallel to the floor or a little higher - but not lower.
I no longer finish the night with a stiff back.

I try to sit parallel to the floor. I don't have a throne with a backrest but I am gonna get one to help with my posture whilst playing.

From one who just had major back surgery, I can tell you that the type, hieght, and distance from the pedals makes a huge difference. I use a Roc-n-Soc with the lumbar support pushed all the way forward. My thighs are angled slightly higher to the ground, and my seat sits just a little further back from the kit. It has made a huge difference in my comfort while playing.

I too had a major back surgery, a good throne is probably your most important piece of hardware. An uncomfortable poorly adjusted seat can have long term negative effects. Think about setting up your kit ergonomically, reach as little as possible. Not only will you pick up speed but you won't feel as beat up after a long gig.

I can attest to this; I have a pretty crappy throne and my back is often starting to hurt me after just an hour or so of playing. I don't know why I haven't gotten a new one...perhaps its time.

I guess I'm not too picky. I have a Gibralter throne with a saddle seat and backrest. Round thrones are good to but I feel more stable in the saddle. One thing I struggle with occasionally is my posture. Sometimes I catch myself leaning forward but I always try to make sure my knees don't raise past my hips while playing. Every now and then I get this REALLY SHARP pain in my hip...it sucks.

I like the round thrones too. I feel odd on a tractor style.

I have a couple of other thrones - both round. I do use them for shorter gigs. The tractor seat throne (also has the backrest) goes out when it's going to be a long night.

i tried the tractor throne, but it was weird--the blood flow to the backs of my thighs felt very compromised. not sure if it was a height issue or what, but my legs got numb.
nonetheless, i like the round roc 'n soc. i like to sit very far forward on the seat, and i find if i have a backrest i'm more apt to sit further back and slouch. plus i'm pretty short, so i feel i have a little more leverage if i just sit straight and forward.
i need a new throne really badly coz the hardware on mine is getting stripped, and it doesn't have a shmancy hydraulic lift. it slips constantly. actually, i don't need the lift so much as the swivel thing--and a nice furry padded seat, to prevent sbs (sweaty butt syndrome). that is a gnarly side-effect of playing drums!

That's how I site, but I really want to get me a Roc'n Soc throne!

They're built well. But any solid, well-made throne will save your back. One thing to consider - the tractor seat thrones are a bit klutzy to pack up, given the size of the seat.

A-men to that! The Roc-n-Soc thrones are the best in my opinion. They hydraulic adjustments are so luxuriuos and the seat cushions have taken roids into consideration (at least preventing them thank god!).
I have both the round doughnut shaped Roc-n-Soc and the Tractor Saddle. I personally favor the doughnut for its more traditional feel.
Stacking up to that would be my Tama Ergo Rider, that thing is like sitting on a Harley, then the Pearl Roadster or DW Airlift. All other thrones are puny!

I've been looking at airlift style thrones - wondering how durable the lift mechanism is. Anyone had one of these for any length of time?
