So, I marched drumline for 7 years, most of it on tenors. In high school, I had shoulder problems. In college, I was built of stone... then... back pain and sciatica hit AFTER I stopped marching. In 2008, I had 2 herniated discs in my lower back. When my doctor asked me what I'd done and I said "Seven years of carrying drums" he just shook his head and told me never to do it again.
Yes, I'm 30, but come on? Never drum again? Never carry?
Riiiiight.
I'm living with two cranky discs (L4-L5 and L5-S1) and healing peripheral nerve damage. And I refuse to give up drumming.
So, how do you deal with back pain?
Me? Ice, tylenol and one of those huge workout balls.

After I blew out a disc in my neck (C5-6) I started going to a Chiropracter. He started me with some laser therapy and it was miraculous! Now 4 years later, I visit him once or twice a year for a laser treatment to keep me going.
