16" Floor Tom to Bass Drum Conversion

Hey Guys..

First post here. Love the site. Lots of cool tips, techniques, and resources.

I picked up a 16" Floor Tom from Craigslist this week for $10. I'm currently making it into a bass drum that I can use as a small practice kit at home or to teach with. I looked into the various conversion products on the market, but they're just too simple for the expensive price tag so I'll be making my own. I plan to use the existing tom legs and drill new holes for a better angle. I'll be refinishing the drum in the process to make it look clean after the new holes are drilled.

I may need to look into a drum riser in the future, but for now I sawed down an old beater and am enjoying the playability and feel without needing a riser. So, i've got two questions:

1) I'm trying to decide on heads to give me a good kick sound out of a 16" tom. The plan was to go with something like the Aquarian Performance II on the batter head to give a deep, semi-muffled sound. But then I came across this: http://www.amazon.com/Evans-Black-Bass-Drumhead-inch/dp/B001E4T9ZI

It's a 16" bass drum head for a marching tom. Offhand, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't fit and do exactly what I'm looking for. What do you think? Any advice on this or other heads?

How about the resonant head? The current idea is a Evans Resonant Black Tom Drumhead but, as of now, it's a pretty arbitrary choice.

2) Has anyone else made the floor tom to bass drum conversion? I know most drummers look for non-permanent ways to make the transition, but this will be a permanent move for me. Any advice?

Thanks!

Hey Shane, welcome to DC. I've done this with a Slingerland floor tom using hardware from a 22" bass drum. It was done as a permanent thing and I'm very happy with the move. I went with a Remo Powerstroke 4 on the batter side and a Fiberskyn3 on the reso side and use no muffling whatsoever. It gives me the balance of attack, tone, and decay I Like. Let us know how it went.
