What to look for when buying heads?

LEE5336 - Sun, 10/10/2010 - 14:50 | 664 views

When you buy heads, what should you look for so you know the head is not a 'dudd' or faulty out of the box?

1. PAY ATTENTION TO THE GLUE AREA AT RIM. NO IMPERFECTIONS AND TRUE. 2. TAP WITH FINGER WHILE HOLDING RIM AND PICK THE ONES WITH THE MOST RESONANCE OUT OF THE BOX. MAKE SURE TO GET ALL THE INFO YOU CAN ABOUT WHAT HEAD IS RIGHT FOR YOUR DRUM/SOUND/STYLE/TUNING AND YOU WILL BE MUCH HAPPIER. SEVERAL BRANDS AND MODELS ARE BETTER FOR ONE TYPE OF SHELL AND BEARING EDGE, AND SOUND LIKE POO ON ANOTHER. REMO AND EVANS ARE NOT THE SAME FOR THAT MATTER.

I have a G2 on my 16" floor tom and unless I tune it up to a higher pitch, I'm getting an oily effect on the head? Don't know whether this is a sign of a defect head? I have a cheap kit too!

I DO ALSO HAVE MY FLOOR TUNED HIGHER THAN ONE WOULD THINK. I BRONG THE PITCH DOWN WITH THE RESO HEAD AND A PIECE OF MOON GEL. AND IM NOT BIG ON MUFFLING. WHAT YOU HEAR AND WHAT THE CROWD OR MICS PICK UP ARE OFTEN NOT THE SAME. THE 16 EVEN TUNED TO LIKE A C# WILL STILL HAVE BALLS, JUST WONT DENT OR SOUND FLAPPY.
