Sticks ?????

saigon - Wed, 01/06/2010 - 18:51 | 5,846 views

O.K., After playing Vic Firth for 20+ years, I decided to try other sticks out. So I try to give Pro-Mark a shot again after many defects when I tried them 15 years back. The sticks have definitely improved and I respect the company, but why is it that when you roll them on a straight flat counter they warp. They are never straight. They felt great and somewhat a bit light for hickory sticks, but sometimes felt inconsistent, surely due to warp sticks. Vater remind me of Vic Firth and i found out sometime ago that Vater used to make sticks for Vic Firth, so no wonder why. Every time I roll a Vic Firth they are perfectly straight. It got to the point I never had to roll them because they are perfect. But why the Pro-Marks roll wobbly? Anyone experience this?

I'd say REGAL TIP, i've used pro-mark,zildjian,vic firth and vater., i really think REGAL TIP has the best feel and it really solves all those vibration problems., it's nylon tip also gives the most out of your heads., no matter what kind of tuning you do., hope this helps you

thanks,

I used Vic Firth Sticks a lot, but most of them were too heavy. While they lasted longer than most other brands, they were never really a good fit for me. Then I did a charity event (The Big Beat) and they gave me some Pro-Mark 5A sticks, and I fell in love with them. 2nd favorite stick is Stanton Moore's signature stick, those just feel fantastic.

I can honestly say that I don't check any of the sticks I buy for wobble. I check the grain near the tip. If it is straight with the stick then the stick will have a good life. However, if the grain cuts across the the stick near the tip then chances are you are going to break that stick quickly. I prefer to play Regal Tip 5BX for heavier stuff or the RKX for mid-range stuff and finally jazz for lighter stuff. With the Regal Tips most of the time the grain is pretty good, but keep your eye out sometimes there is one that is not.

So ummm, yeah..disregard my last comment. Out of curiosity I had to try Vater sticks. Let's just say it was time to move on. I am now happily using the Los Angeles - 5A stick. And yes, I DID roll them, and they were all perfectly straight.

Oh man. I love Pro Marks but have been experiencing the same thing, horribly warped sticks. Vic Firth is a great stick, but as silly as it sounds I just don't feel at home with Vic. So I'll be the guy rolling 30 pairs of Pro Marks at your local drum shop!!!

I haven't thought about rolling sticks like that for years. God bless Vic Firth!

Rock Maple drum sticks FTW!!!

In answer to your question, I'd speculate that the wood isn't seasoned as long, hence the warpage after cutting.

But I ain't no woodworker dude. :-)

I don't think I've ever rolled a pair of sticks in my life to check for wobbling. I just check them out to see if they feel good and play good on the pad before I buy them. I guess outta sight outta mind.

Hi Saigon,
I've only used Vater sticks, but do come across a few that wobble when I check them before purchasing. I'm not sure why Pro-Marks have more wobble, possibly they don't quite take out all the moisture from the sticks before they ship, but you would think their QA department would catch that... Anyway, I would also recommend trying out a pair of Ahead sticks by Easton. I always keep a pair and enjoy them when I switch to high gear and need to drive the groove for a bit.
