Advice on Stage Monitors for live playing.

cwmdrummer - Wed, 12/23/2009 - 13:24 | 3,446 views

So I'm in a band and most of the venues we play at do not have a monitor for the drumset. I know this isn't really necessary, but it is something that I really enjoy having. Does anyone have advice on what I should look for in a monitor or even a specific monitor to consider. Again, I'm in a rock band. Check out our music if you need a better idea of what style (http://www.myspace.com/cwmrock). Thanks!

in-ear wireless monitor is the best solution. Not cheap ($300-$600), but will make life easier and your ears last longer. Sure & sennheiser make them. you can pack it in a side packet of a bag, vs lugging around a wedge monitor. Look for them 'used' first. I got a good deal on a used one from Guitar Center.

In-ear is good, but you seriously have to have a good FOH sound man, or your own Stage Sound man to run in-ear monitor headsets. And they are rather expensive, and dependent on the system that the venue is using to run the guitarists and drums and vocals through, the mix would end up chaotic and not at all quality that a drummer would need live.... Unless you are like Dream Theater equivalent in money expenses, etc. etc.
Go out and take a look into KUSTOM monitors, P.A.'s and of course mains, these are pretty inexpensive and are an all around great deal. Johnny Cash used them, if that tells you anything. If you run the foh sound or stage sound P.A. into your own personal P.A. and have pair Kustom 10" stage wedges, you would be set man.

Have you ever tried in-ear monitors? They are much easier to lug around :) You could get a single Condensor mic and pump it through your in-ears and monitor everything on stage to some degree, depending on where the mic is positioned - or get a feed from the sound man :)

*By monitor for the drumset I meant monitor by the drumset, so that I can hear what the rest of the band is doing a little better*
