How to Record from Electric Kit

britty4rose - Tue, 06/09/2009 - 10:02 | 6,319 views

Just recently picked up a low-end ion set. It has a standard 1/4 headphone jack, 2 outputs for left and right and a MIDI output. I am just trying to record some beats to be able to email them out to friends. I have no idea where to start. Looking for fairly simple software/gear. Just want to be able to get a recording of me playing and be able to send/store on my computer.

Thanks in advance.

Direct to Quicktime Pro (mac or PC) works great too.

On Windows, you don't need anything crazy. You can get a free program called GoldWave and then jack your electronic kit into your sound card's input jack and then record straight up single track WAV files. http://www.goldwave.com

You can also do it from Garage Band (Free on a Mac) or use Logic Studio (about $800 on a mac) or Logic Express (about $200 on a mac). Either way, I highly recommend Mac for recording. On Windows, I gave up trying due to how crappy Windows runs on any kind of serious operation such as recording audio / video.

Also, they sell Midi to USB converters for like $25. This gives you Midi option into your computer via USB because most computers don't have midi ports anymore.

The best and easiest is Garage Band on a Mac. Otherwise use Audacity on a PC. (Free but crashes... dah.. it's a PC) I use a Mac and go directly into the record mic port. You can also layer tracks.
