In a recent announcement made by Metallica's Lars Ulrich, the outspoken one claims that the band will not follow suit like other acts such as U2, Madonna, and Jay-Z by signing a contract with Live Nation.

Live Nation is the largest producer of live concerts in the world, annually producing over 16,000 concerts for 1,500 artists in 57 countries. The company sells over 45 million concert tickets a year and expects to drive over 60 million unique visitors to LiveNation.com in 2009. Live Nation is transforming the concert business by expanding its concert platform into ticketing and building the industry's first artist-to-fan vertically integrated concert platform.

But Lars is not having any part of it. The candid rocker claimed that doing so was considered to be "selling out". "We haven't sold out to Live Nation, and we are certainly not planning on it. And we are very, very fortunate that we do not need what they offer to continue to be who we are."He then goes on to say "Let's cut to the chase. . . . The primary, not the only, but the primary - function of a record label is to act as a bank.

"When you're fortunate enough to be successful and so on, you don't need to rely on record companies as the banks." Seems to make sense, but then again I don't see Madonna, U2 or Jay-Z hurting for cash these days. Some consider this approach as simply adapting to the ever changing structure of the music industry. As Live Nation continues to grow into an inevitable Monopoly, Lars may have no other choice but to sign with the industry giant, kicking and screaming all the way. Some fans were outraged over the upcoming release of the highly anticipated Guitar Hero Metallica Edition claiming that was a "sell out" move. However, it seems Lars had no problem cashing that check.
