We’ve all been told about the horrors of drugs and how they can destroy lives, marriages, and careers. Some of the greatest musicians in the history of Rock N Roll have long passed from untimely deaths due to their noxious effects and addictive characteristics. Some of us have been exposed to the lifestyle through VH1’s Behind The Music, while some are all too familiar. But apparently there is a certain comradery that drug addicts share amongst each other, as Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich explained in a brief interview with Blender magazine. Throughout the years Lars has been involved in a love/hate relationship with fans ever since the “Napster incident.” Whether you approve or not he did manage to bring a chuckle or two out of me once I read what he had to say about the good ol’ days.
Tales from days of wine and coke
December 2, 2008
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich gave up cocaine awhile ago, but he does miss something about it.
"The bonding," he tells Blender magazine. "Two guys in a bathroom stall—it feels like the most important place in the whole world in that moment. I've actually gone into bathroom stalls with friends since I quit, just so I still have a little bit of that bonding."
As to whether he was out of control with the drinking, he says he never felt the need to go to rehab.
"It was always social drinking. Honestly, I never drank nearly as much as [James] Hetfield. Look at me, I'm 138 pounds. If I had five beers, I'd fall over, and if James had five, he'd go, 'I need 15 more.' I was never one of these wake-up-and-reach-for-the-whiskey-bottle types. I would at least have the decency to eat breakfast first."
Tell me about it... I found out last year at NAMM that you can have the best of both worlds when I ordered the Scarface Breakfast Combo.
