After racking up a few DVD's for purchase, I snagged the Hal Leonard Trust Your Ears: The Drum Tech Explorations of Jeff Ocheltree DVD and began watching it today. At first, it looked like a dated DVD that was not of the best quality, but this DVD had many things to offer that is worth the $20 purchase.
"Jeff Ocheltree transitioned from replaceable roadie to invaluable drum tech by being the first person to take complete care of all aspects of the drums, in the glory days of such legends as Bonham and Cobham. In his first instructional DVD, he discusses his experiences and teaches techniques valuable to drum techs and all drummers with hands-on examples using 9 different kits and 9 drummers. Jeff also discusses the unique bronze drums he makes from recycled cymbals. As a special bonus, John Bonham's kit used in Zeppelin recordings appears on-screen for the first time ever, and Bonzo's settings, tunings, and mic placements are revealed! 60 minutes."
Inside this DVD, you're introduced to Jeff Ocheltree. At first, you have to sit back, pay your respect and just listen to the man. He's about to open up a nice exploration of not only the greatest Rock history ever, but he's here to share with you some of his friends to include Tool's Danny Carey which comes on set and has a nice performance, Steve Smith and a few others. As well, you are awarded a great opportunity to view John Bonham's green Ludwig Sparkle kit used on many of his recordings. Jeff discusses snare drums used, to include the Ludwig 402 all metal snare for the legendary Led Zeppelin albums.

I met Jeff at NAMM 2008 about 5 times during a 3 day visit. Jeff is an outstanding individual and really takes time to talk to you. He's willing to listin and he's a walking history lesson on music. I really wish Jeff well and I hope to see him again.

I personally own this same video, and I thought it was a great video explaining some recording, and tuning tips used in the past, which can still be used in the future. It was well worth my purchase, plus anything that has to do with John Bonham, I have to own. I want a 402 Ludwig Supraphonic really bad! :]
