I taught drums back in the late 70s & early 80s.  So, it's been a while since I've taken on any students.  But I find myself with several opportunities lately so I'm thinking of getting back into it.

Back then I used the Haskell Harr Drum Method or the Phil Perkins "Logical Approach" series, along with my own written exercises.

Those of you who teach, what are your preferred method books these days for beginner and intermediate level kids?

Dave,

I hope you will consider my book, Drumscapes, which I have designed over the past 10 years to be suitable for beginners and intermediates.

For a review of the book, you can visit http://www.drummercafe.com/content/view/202/29/.

I just got a publishing deal through Cherry Lane/Hal Leonard to transform the one book into a separate beginner's and intermediate's book. Because of that fact (and the fact that I still have remaining copies of the original Drumscapes, the book is now on sale at $19.95, which includes 2 CD's. You can get it through amazon.com.

The updated books will be called Drumcraft and should be available later this year or early next.

Thanks, Andy.  I'll take a look.  I hang at DrummerCafe as well as here - not sure how I missed the review of your book.

I'm not that in to books but the ones I have found beneficial are Studio Drumming/Steve Houghton, and all of John Riley's books.

I would have to say Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone. This book was first published in 1935 and has been a MUST HAVE ever since. You can find it online or in just about any music store that sells books. Anyone who's anyone has read this book. 4-Way Coordination: A Method Book for the Development of Complete Independence on the Drum Set written by Marvin Dahlgren and Elliot Fin is another good one.
