"I joined the drum line because I like playing music, especially drums," - Josh Durham
The hard part of being a member of the Hamilton High School indoor drum line is "putting all the music together and memorizing the notes," said HHS student Josh Durham.
"The easy part is receiving awards," Durham said.
Since its inception three years ago, the HHS percussion group has taken home a number of first- and second- place trophies.
The most recent victory was at the Mid East Performance Association competition, which qualified the group to compete at the state competition scheduled Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, in Centerville.
"I joined the drum line because I like playing music, especially drums," Durham said. "I would like to pursue that as a career and I like to involve myself in activities that involve percussion."
A member of the marching band, Durham said that playing indoors is a good thing "because you are more confined and you don't have to play really loud for the audience to hear you."
But, because "we have outdoor drums and they are made to carry over long distances, we have to play quieter or softer indoors," he said.
Indoor drum lines began showing up in the late 1980s and have taken off in the past decade, said Bob Saurber , director for the group.
"We felt it would be great training for the marching band during the winter," Saurber said. "Our goal is to raise the proficiency level in the drum line and by doing so raise the over all proficiency of the band."
Sophomore Gabi Lindsay joined up because "I get to play music and it is good conditioning for marching band season," she said. "It's a different way to play music and a lot of schools around us don't have an indoor drum line so that sets our school apart."
