Im new to drum and learning all that I can. Right now I just have a pair of sticks and a practice pad. I really want to begin taking lessons with an instructor, would it be best for me to wait until I have a kit of my own or can I go ahead and start taking lessons?
Also I am saving up for a kit right now...would it be bad to start with an electronic kit as opposed to an acoustic one? What do you guys think about the Alesis DM5 Electronic Set?

It would be just fine to start out with just a pad and sticks. At this point you can get your hands (grip, rudiments, etc) all down so when you can afford a kit, all you have to really learn is the coordination between the four limbs, and how to apply all the hand technique you learned to the kit. Get started right away and just play! You will get soo much better faster!

Take this wonderful time that you have without having a kit and practice hand technique, rudiments and more importantly, learn how to read music! Once you get your kit, it's game on and you won't want to take the time to learn that stuff before the bad habbits form. Seriously, enjoy this time! It will make you enjoy your kit so much more!

it would be best to take lessons on hand technique, because you can practice it. but as for everthing else like foot technique and coordination you can take lessons but you would need a set or at least a freinds set to practice the concepts that the teacher would show you.
As for electric or acoustic sets, both are good but electric sets are more expensive. i prefer acoustic sets because i love the craftsmanship and all that and you can experiment with tunning and getting the sound you want out of the drums. But with the advancements in technology you can adjust the sounds on an electric set and i also like the fact that most of them have built in metronomes and tracks you can play with. The tracks are really good for practice especially if you are not going to playing with a church band or any band just yet, it kinda prepares you for the future! Well hope this long message has helped you!
Good luck and God bless!
