What's in your stick bag?

Dave Heim - Thu, 07/10/2008 - 09:29 | 9,222 views

The stuff that ends up in my stick bags is amazing.  Every once in a while they need to be emptied and purged (like an old wallet).  But for the most part, I tend to stock them with the same regular items:

2 pairs Vic Firth Stanton Moore sticks
2 pairs Vic Firth Classic 5B nylon tip
1 pair Pro Mark Oak 7A
1 pair Regal Tip 7A e-series nylon tip
1 pair Vic First wire brushes
2 pairs Rute Rods (light & med)
i pair Musser red yarn mallets
1 felt bass drum beater (Ludwig)
Korg MA30 metronome
Drum keys
Tympani key
Snare cord
Cymbal sleeves
Moon Gel
Business cards
Pencils
Sharpie
small flashlight
ear plugs and/or IEMs

Jazz Bag (small Reunion Blues leather bag)
2 pairs Vic Firth Steve Gadd sticks
1 pairs Vic Firth Stanton Moore sticks
1 pairs Vic Firth Classic 5B nylon tip
1 pair Pro Mark Oak 7A
1 pair Regal Tip 7A e-series nylon tip
1 pair Regal Tip 5A e-series nylon tip
1 pair Vic First wire brushes
1 pairs Rute Rods (med)
1 pair Musser red yarn mallets
1 pair tymp mallets soft
1 pair tymp mallets hard
Korg MA30 metronome
Drum keys
Tympani key
Snare cord
Cymbal sleeves
Moon Gel
Business cards
Pencils
Sharpie
small flashlight
ear plugs and/or IEMs

I have been using the large pocket on my cymbal bag to carry all my sticks, mallets, drum key, a pack of rivets, and a few shakers. I also keep a set of moongels with me, but they tend to bounce between that pocket and the interior of my snare bag.

Is this a stick bag?? or a stick duffel bag? Ha Ha, I'm currently taking drum lessons from the drummer for Sixpence None The Richer. He has a bag full of all kinds of goodies. So I'm guessing more stuff/being prepared is better, but I typically pack a few pairs of promark 7a nylons/woods, P.M 2B, brushes, lighting rods, and a pair of cymbal mallets.

Its always smart to carry an extra drum key, and some form of muffling. Definitely a roll of duck tape should be in every drummers bag!!

lmao, what's funny is that the day I got my set, I told my wife I needed some duck tape...she just didn't understand.

I think the basic answer is at 2 pairs spare sticks of what you play, mallets, brushes, some keys. Minimum.

lol I know moon gel sounds like something stupid I know, but they have a great purpose. They are used to help get rid of unwanted ring on a drum. They are reusable and washable (soap and water only) and they work like magic in the studio or live mostly when your drums under some microphones. You can also cut them up into smaller pieces if you don't wanna muffle a drum too much. =]

Two spare 7B nylon pair sticks, one pair Zildjian goatskin soft mallets {the ones with the other end hard rubber balls}, a pair of the soft brushes that are tubed for storage {not slid out of a handle}, needed kit wrenches. I also carry a couple screwdrivers, a slip-joint plier, duct and electric tape rolls. Never know when the sound or a guitar goes west. I also carry a drummer's cheat sheet pamphlet of alternate beats to refer to, but I really never used it much. Smokes, a 1/2 pint, that was it.

You'd have to bring an extra drum tech to help lug all that gear. . .[/quote]

Naah - it's not really that much.  The parts & tools are small (just a couple of sleeves & keys - tiny flashlight, etc.), and they fit into the external pockets.  Ther Korg is the largest of the doo-dads and it's only the size of a deck of cards!  The rest are just sticks!

I don't bring both bags when I go out - just the one that I need for the gig.  However, they're both loaded up with the kind of "oops!" stuff I might need along the way.

I also have a small drum repair kit in the car - there's more stuff in there!

You'd have to bring an extra drum tech to help lug all that gear. I can't remember everything but here we go:

1 pr Ahead
3 pr Vater 5a
2 pr 3Drumsticks 5a
1 pr Zildjian cymbal mallets
1 pr Vic Firth Wire Brushes
3 pr Vater Alienfreak Drumsticks
1 pr Pro Mark Matt Savage sticks
1 pr Silverfox Clawstix
oops make that 2
Several pairs of marching sticks and miscalleanous spares and backup sticks
Remo Puttypad
Earplugs
Flashlight
Sharpie
WD 40 oil pen
Tons of drum keys
Earplugs
Spare parts, felts and knick-knacks
Good Question!

Wow, that's alot invested in those two bags. I need to stock up haha. I don't think I keep enough sticks in my bag. I use those same musser mallets, they are great! Same with the wire brushes, I use the vic firth ones too, but I think I could use some new ones.
