Rack Tom keep slipping

Hawkeyes83 - Wed, 01/14/2009 - 14:53 | 7,775 views

Hey everybody.

Does anybody have any advice on how to fix the locking system on a rack tom.  My tom just won't stay in place!  I'll tighten the nut as far as it goes, and the thing will just rotate and slip all over the place.

Keep in mind, the kit is not mine.  I've only had it for a month now and have been making alot of repairs.  It's four years old and still has the stock skins...so you can imagine what type of care the owner provided for her kit.

Any advice you have for a semi new drummer is much appreciated.  Much love.

Honestly man...
Hardware for the kit isn't that expensive...
It really isn't...
Assuming it is a five piece...
And perhaps all of the hardware isn't even there...?
I am making this assumption without seeing any pictures so... Yeah.
I would just get new hardware and have the girl or guy whoever owns it, pay you back...?
Unless you plan to buy the kit, buy it in the current condition cheap and then bam, you got a nice drum-set you don't feel bad about buying stuff for....
Peace Bro!

Kinda thinking like Kyle here, but one quick trick might be plumber's tape, lightly wrapped around the mounting rod {gives a grip for stripped threads}. Temp. fix, though.

yeah some of Mapex's hardware has it's faults, but I heard most of their new stuff is pretty good!

They're a good company that stands by their product, you shouldn't have any problems.

Kyle is right. You may just need to but a whole new mount or just speak with someone at Mapex for the specific part.

If you need to replace a lug drum hardware manufactures, such as gibraltar usually make spare parts like that, just make sure you get the right measurement.

Looking at the mount, it doesn't look like those locks do much more than just keep the tom at the right height, im not sure if you can get any better memory locks though. Gibraltar makes some, those are the only ones i know of.

Tape wont do much for those mounts, it'll rip up pretty fast.

It seems like it would be the actual mount on your drum.

Don't know what to say  :-\

Had some problems with my last post.  Anyways...

I don't know why I called it a rack tom, I'm not using a rack (oops!).  It's not the mount that's the problem, it's the locking system for the drum.  I can use either arm and the drum still just slips.  I've got it set up now where I just anticipate the slip and let the drum rest in the spot I want it (more or less) but I need to get an actual repair or fix so the kit will actually last and sound good.  I am using the memory locks that came with the kit, might there be a better lock I can buy?  And if it's the actual lug, how can I replace it?

I had an idea to maybe wrap some tape or something around the arm to give the drum's locking system a bit more girth to grip.  Is this a good idea or would there be a better substance to use than tape?

Many thanks and much love.

the tape is good for a quick fix..but not a permanent one. from what it sounds like the teeth inside the mount on the drum are stripped. Sometimes that'll happen with stands like that, and if you buy a new mount it shouldn't cost you much more than $7 on special order from GC or something. and don't worry about calling it a rack tom..that's what we call it in the music biz :P

I tried to attatch a picture of the mount, but I guess I couldn't figure out how to do it:

What type of rack are you using? You may have to put a tacky substance on the inside of the mount to keep it from sliding. Try using the rubbery/sponge material that is used to line the inside of kitchen drawers.

What kind of mount is it?

Just some general advice would be to check if the lug itself is worn down, It could be not reaching the mount. This could be the root cause and an easy fix. just buy another lug the right size.
If its not worn down or anything, it might just be a bad mount(maybe the company put the wrong size mount on it.) or it could just not be creating enough friction.

But if thats not the cause, i would just go out and buy a memory lock that fits your mount, they lock your drum in place.
