Double Pedals

Dave Heim - Wed, 07/09/2008 - 23:57 | 3,606 views

Any double pedal users out there?

I use one from time to time, depending on what group I'm working with.  I used a DW5002 for many years and it's still going strong on my practice set.

A couple of years ago I upgraded to the DW9002.  It's solid, quiet, quick, infinitely adjustable, and quite possibly the best pedal I've owned.

Anybody else?  What's your double pedal preference?

Hey everybody. Does anyone know about, or actually use these pedals? And what do you think about them. They are DW5002ADS specilty pedals with a one piece pedal board with no heel plate. A picture of it is on the DW web site since you can't post any pictures on this site, right?

I use Axis, a bit expensive but I love them, will never use another pedal. its great for metal and speed and build like a machine. I do have to say they take a while to get used to. they are very differant than any other pedal. the have an alternate drive shaft system and you can adjust the foot board and you can adjust the beater and spring tension independently. I was also thinking about buying the Trick Pro V-1, but they are 700 dollars!!!! not sure if I should or not.

For the Price I like the Pearl Eliminators over the Iron cobras and 5002. But I like the trick Pro V2 over axis or the Demon drive and far above the 9002. (sorry DW) Granted the demon drive is tied with axis in my opinion overall I think the axis plays nicer but it is uglier than the bottom of a fat ladies shoe.

I'll be purchasing my first double bass pedal in about 3 weeks. The pedal I've chosen is the Gibraltar Intruder Direct Drive. I've been in the market for a direct drive pedal for a while, but the price of them has been out of my league until I found the Intruder Direct Drive. It comes with a case, and is only $300.00.

I'm gonna be the different one. I have a Taye double pedal and I love it. It's kinda like an Iron Cobra but with more adjustments.

i spent about $280 on a PDP double and have been extremely pleased. I've encountered issues with the lugs getting a bit losse to where the left petal drops to far and hits the base of the petal. Clanky metal sound = not good. before i realised it was the lug i put a sock under the petal to dampen it. ha. Other than that, its responce is amazing and very durable. I've put the beaters through a few heads though.

Direct drive pedals are becoming more popular these days. I would like to own one but they cost too much. I was surprised to see just how much the regular kick pedals have gone up in price. I remember when the Eliminator and the Cobra's were around $250-280. You could even catch them on sale for like $220!!! And this was only 2-3 yrs ago! Now they cost between 300-350. I've even seen them online for more than that! Crazy stuff man. ???

i feel like a noob bec right now i have a sound precussion pedal...and quite frankly, it sucks. probably the worst $100 ive ever spent. i have a friend who has a pdp boa and im thinking about tracking one of those down and getting one. it was smooth and responsive but it had resistance in in it. the good kind of resistence. the kind that keeps a pedal from just bouncing back and forth due to unbalanced spring tension. it was a great pedal. by far my fav. iron cobra's a 9002p's are pretty nice. i also got a chance to play a trick single and it was amazing. i'd say its just as good as the boa but a trick single is about as expensive as a boa double so i'll go for the less expensive one lol

I've owned them both and I like the Eliminators better. Both pedals are GREAT but the Pearl seemed to be more adjustable and user friendly. I used to love the beaters on the Iron Cobra but now I need something with a little more weight to it.

Im not sure, when i tried the eliminators i wasn't that fond of them, but maybe it was just because i wasn't used to the feeling, i like the cobras because you can get a lot of control from them and a lot of power. and with the cobra coil its pretty responsive. But the eliminators are pretty good, since you can change all the cams and a bunch of other stuff.

I love scarified btw, really awesome song.

Look.... I play drums for about 3 and a half years. I borrowed a pearl eliminator with belt drive from my best friend to start practicing with double bass. I have studied george kollias tecnique and i only lack the muscles to maintain a fast double bass patern. For example, i played scarified from racer x band, 2 days after i started practicing. I  have a question by the way! I am thinking about buying a double bass pedal in about 400 euros.(thats the price of the pearl's eliminator pedal in greece, to make you understand the prices)Iron cobra is at the same price with the eliminator. Should i prefer eliminator? Most people believe that the eliminator is the best and it comes second after the axis longboards.Any other suggestions?

CAN someone plz tell me the price of  axis longboards, like the ones that george kollias from nile uses, in euros?
[/quote]
I think Kollias uses the A-2 longboards and those go for around like $650 AMERICAN keep in mind though that it is much better to develop double pedal skills on a beginner pedal than a super expensive one, the pedal doesn't make the player, and since Axis fly so easily, its hard to build the muscle you need for double bass on them. That's all if your just starting tho.

I was looking at the demon drive pedals, they look like they have all the same features that an axis does, from reading the description. I'm glad Pearl FINALLY switched over to a direct drive and not a chain. way more responsive.

I did find it funny that they said that they had the worlds "first adjustable footboard" I'm pretty sure i saw another pedal that did the exact same thing.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion tho :p I'm happy with my axis pedal, probably wont buy another pedal again xD

*edit* forgot to mention that the going price on the demon drive is more than the mostof the axis longboards. in my opinion i'd rather get the custom made pedals than the factory made ones, but hey, im not a pearl fan initially so don't take my word for it.

They go for around $650 and that's a bit pricey for me. Awesome pedal though, very adjustable if you're a serious pedal tweaker.

Yeah i saw the new Demon drive at NAMM, they are sick, but I heard the double is going for at least $700+ when it comes out. I'll still with my d-dub 5000s haha, I love them anyways

Hello guys! I have to agree with drumfreak that for now the best, most versatile and most responsive AFFORDABLE double bass pedal is the pearl eliminator with the belt drive. These pedals cannot OF COURSE be compared to the mighty, ultra smooth and ultra fast axis longboards but, hey! Axis cost a fortune!
Btw! I took a look at the new pearl eliminator demon drive double bass pedal and i strongly believe that this pedal is going to be much better than even the axis and more affordable. ;)

I have used Iron cobras back in the 90's then they changed the design and I didnt like the new design. I went to double Pearl eliminator pedals and found a comfort zone with them, however, I'm looking into a double set of trick pedals. All reviews have proved favorable and have used a set from a friend and it's a real smooth set up.

kyle7863 Says Re: Double Pedals

They have a whole manual on what to adjust and how when you buy them, yeah you do need all the allen wrenches but they give you a nice set of them when you buy them.

As far as user friendliness, it takes a little getting used to, but after you get the hang of what to adjust to fix stuff its not a problem.

It's awesome having all the adjustability though. The only problem that i've had is with the sonic hammers. one of mine keeps getting loose and adjusting itself. not a big problem though i just grabbed a plyer and tightened it real hard.

Great pedals.

Since you own one I have a question for you. How user friendly is the pedal when it comes to making adjustments? I've only seen these in person a few times and seems to me like you need at least 4 different sizes of allen wrenches to even begin messing around with those pedals. How is the adjustability for those quick fixes?

Axis is great if you can afford it.

I have used the Pearl 2002 and the DW 5002. In comparison, I happen to like the DW's better and am selling the Pearl's. My DW's have been smoother and I can make them work with a lighter feel. I happen to like the ease of adjustment better in the DW's than the Pearl's too. Swapping cam's is not my favorite thing, for instance. I am now using the right foot half on jazz gigs too. I also like the footboard on the DW's.
As usual, just personal preference though.

I've played an Iron Cobra for years. Its a decient peddal but after 6 years it's a little clunky and if I don't oil it regularly the mics will pick it up.

Trick makes an amazing pedal, as well.

I have their single pedal, but the double is WAY cool.  Made from solid aluminum billets, the thing is rock solid, crazy adjustable, smooth, and quiet.

My first double pedal was a Tama Iron Cobra and I loved it. It was a great pedal and it held up through much abuse and I never had any problems with it. As a matter of fact one of my students is using it now! But my latest is the Pearl Eliminator and I love it. Probable the most user-friendly, fully adjustable double pedal you can get. And you can't beat the price. When I worked at GC these things were flying out of my drum department like CRACK! So I guess what I'm saying is ......it's a pretty good pedal ;D

I'm actually a Dw 5002 player. Always loved the pedal, and everytime you clean in and give it some maintnance, it's like a new pedal! The only thing i don't like about my pedal, is the universal joints that connect the two pedals has some "play" in them. Does anyone know how i could fix this. Do you think the factory would cover it?

We at Drummer Connection have quite a few double pedals. I can say that most of us prefer the Pearl Eliminator double pedals. They are really smooth and responsive, as well as durable.  On one of my Gretsch kits, we have the DW-9000 single pedal, and on the other the DW-9002 double. I personally like all of these pedals, but the Pearl ones are my favorite.
